Where else in the world do you want to try on for size?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Where else in the world do you want to try on for size?

Post by Georgina »

Versus Cambodia I mean.

For me (seriously)...

country: Mongolia
appeal: frontier market
irrational fears: potatoes and mutton
expectations: bring log underwear

country: Sri Lanka
appeal: Buddhist/Hindu
irrational fears: no houses of Vietnamese like near bridge
expectations: cheap curry, buy a house in Jaffna

country: Pakistan
appeal: LaWhore, Sikh pilgrimage site
irrational fears: chapatis and dhal 7 days a week
expectations: undervalued as a frontier market

country: Trobriand Islands
appeal: Yam festival
irrational fears: spam (in a tin not as trojan)
expectations: outrageous airfare to get there, idyllic sea bathing

country: Georgia (Caucasus)
appeal: nobody goes there
irrational fears: free long visa on arrival stopped
expectations: second Christian nation in history

country: Argentina
appeal: blonde I met in Havana
irrational fears: it takes three to tango
expectations: good wine, too expensive cost of living for this semi-employed loser

Also - Turkey (food, history), Uruguay (banking), Ukraine (blondes), Iceland (infect the gene pool)

Also - Turkey
These 2 are on my radar for January! Although Ethiopia is likely to win this round...

Good link. I was going to ask what the criteria of definition were, but this article covers that. I knew that the Vikings (Visigoths? Early Germans?) felt their beliefs challenged by "this Jesus of the Romans".

Another country a poor man can afford. Maybe Chile, a country also with a troubled social and political history that unlike Cambodia, seems headed in the right direction. Long, long coastline full of seafood, highly educated people and many climate options. Also want to meet Nicanor Parra, a famous poet from a famous family who is still alive in this nineties. Like Argentina, there appears to be a big European cultural influence here. But above all some place where I can live and travel cheaply.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

I stand corrected.

"The first Christian nation was Armenia in 301, Ethiopia was probably second in about 325, and Georgia was third, somewhere around 337."

http://www.kencollins.com/old-polls/poll-05.htm

BTW, I am not Christian, except in the broadest cultural context, which of course is what it is. I just think Christians take a lot of flak they don't deserve. And I am concerned about the Islamicization of the world. My understanding is that much of the Levant (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan etc) was once Christian. The problem with Islamic leaders getting a foothd is then it becomes land to be 'reclaimed'.

Well, your answer could still be considered accurate. The article also said this:
It’s possible that everyone is right, if they are using different criteria.

This question was about the date on which the governments of those countries first adopted Christianity as the official state religion. The date on which Christianity became prevalent among the people would be earlier than that, and the arrival of the apostle would be earlier still. (All three countries were evangelized in apostolic times by apostles.) If you use either of those two criteria, the countries could come in a different order.
