Great initiative, the Japanese have done a wonderful job in flood mitigation in the capital but there was always that issue about all the waste water flowing into Boeing Tumpun and on into the Bassac. A treatment plant will be a boon.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Japan grants $3.2 million for school food programme
Japan yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding to provide $3.2 million through the World Food Programme to support the government’s implementation of a food aid programme in schools for the benefit of 200,000 vulnerable children.

The grant was made during a signing ceremony between Japanese Ambassador Mikami Masahiro and WFP country director Francesca Erdelmann, which was witnessed by Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron.

Mr Masahiro said WFP will use the grant assistance to purchase approximately 415 metric tonnes of canned fish to be used in a breakfast project to feed schoolchildren from the most vulnerable communities.

“Cambodia’s economy has grown significantly over the past years and the poverty rate has decreased dramatically,” he said. “However, especially in rural areas, a significant portion of the population still suffers from malnutrition because they lack access to sufficient and various food.”

Mr Masahiro said that by providing canned fish for the WFP’s School Feeding Programme, Japan’s assistance will contribute to improving not only children’s health, but also their access to education.

“I sincerely hope that our assistance will be effectively used to secure a better future for children,” he noted.

Is Cambodia the right place for Japanese investors?
In an exclusive interview with Khmer Times, Miyao Masahiro, chief representative of the Japan External Trade Organisation, shares his institution’s view on the Kingdom’s economy as well as its bilateral relationship with Japan.

KT: First of all, what is JETRO? And what are its functions?

Mr Masahiro: JETRO, standing for Japan External Trade Organisation, is a semi-governmental organisation that promotes trade and investment between Japanese companies and the rest of the world. In Cambodia, of course, we are promoting trade and investment between the two countries, but also supporting Japanese companies operating their businesses in Cambodia. We are also working closely with the Cambodian government to enhance business empowerment in Cambodia to increase foreign direct investment into Cambodia.

And the Japanese keep on giving...

Japan grants $190K for environment education
19 November 2019
The government of Japan, via its embassy in Cambodia, granted more than $190,000 on Tuesday to Nature Centre Risen, an NGO for environmental education at kindergarten and secondary schools in the Kingdom.

The grant is for the project, “Realisation of Sustainable Life Environment through the teaching of practical environmental education in Teacher Education College”.

“In this project, Nature Centre Risen will establish a continuous training system of environmental education from pre-school to lower secondary schools in Cambodia.

“This will be done through revising instruction books for teachers, publishing the environmental education textbooks for students and providing support for the Pre-School Teacher Training Centre,” said the Embassy of Japan in a press release.

“It will continue to help Cambodian people become more aware of environmental issues,” it said.

Japanese ambassador Masahiro Mikami said the grant was provided to Nature Centre Risen because the NGO has been educating youths about the environment and the importance of nature at teacher training colleges in Phnom Penh and in Battambang province.

“For this year’s project, the NGO will revise instruction books to improve the quality of teaching for environment officials, print books for students at primary and secondary schools and support environmental education at the kindergarten teacher training centre,” Mikami said.

He expects the project to help raise awareness about environmental protection in order to preserve the biodiversity of nature and a green living environment for the people.
