Gov’t aims for 300,000 Japanese visitors by 2020
Cambodia aims to attract more than 300,000 Japanese tourists a year by 2020, the Minister of Tourism revealed during a festival in the Japanese capital.

Speaking during the Cambodian Festival 2019, held on April 3-4 (sic) in Tokyo, Minister Thong Khon said he expects an increase in the number of Japanese nationals visiting the Kingdom as a result of stronger relations between the countries.

“In 2019, we expect to receive 230,000 Japanese tourists,” Minister Khon said. “I firmly believe that the Cambodia Festival 2019 will contribute to the promotion of Cambodian culture, traditions and economic and tourism potential.”

Mr Khon called for more direct flights between Japan and Cambodia, particularly to Siem Reap, home of the Unesco-listed Angkor Archaeological Complex, the country’s top tourist draw.

Last year, 6.2 million foreign tourists visited the Kingdom, a 10.7 percent increase. Of these, 210,000 were Japanese – a 3.5 percent year-on-year hike – making Japan one of Cambodia’s top ten tourism markets.

In Cambodia, Japan Digs in to Keep China’s Rise in Check
11 May 2019
On the other hand, Japan upholds a longstanding position that China may find it hard to replace when it comes to Cambodia. Analysts said Japan’s preference for backstage diplomacy and avoidance of public criticism is aligned with the Cambodian government.

But the calls for Japan to change its approach have not ceased.

In March Human Rights Watch and Japanese advocate Teppei Kasai wrote a commentary urging Japan to “stop acting like China” in response to Cambodia’s crackdowns.

“Japan is fighting a losing battle for HE’s support. Japan can’t outspend China or deliver sweetheart contracts to Cambodia, yet its overt and clumsy attempts to ingratiate itself have led to a backlash among Cambodian activists, who see Tokyo selling out democracy and human rights to maintain a friendship with a dictator,” they added.

Neither the Chinese nor Japanese embassies in Phnom Penh responded to VOA’s request for comment.

In Cambodia, however, Japan has outperformed China when it comes to trust and confidence, Vannarith added.

“Though China is leading when it comes to aid and investment, China will find it hard to win the hearts and minds of Cambodian people, which is categorized as the most important long-term [factor for] competition."

The Seattle-based expert Jensen Murg said that Cambodia had to pay less political costs when it came to Japanese aid.

Japan’s Strategy in the Mekong Region
Opinion Sim Vireak
Concerted actions and tangible achievements over the past 10 years of the Mekong-Japan Cooperation have significantly contributed to the transformation of the Mekong region to be one of the global growth centers.

Japan’s commitment to promote quality growth-both hard and soft infrastructure connectivity- further boosts economic potentials of the region and narrows the development gap within Asean. Such effort has been consistently hailed by the Mekong countries.

The Cambodian PM is in Japan today.

Cambodian PM calls for Japanese investment
1 hour ago
The Prime Minister of Cambodia is trying to drum up more business from Japanese firms.

HE told a gathering in Tokyo on Wednesday that Cambodia is making it easier for foreign companies to invest. He said his country is eager to benefit from Japanese expertise in food processing and other industries.

HE promised to make a change to the corporate tax system to meet a request by Japanese firms. He said that will happen as early as this year.

Since 2011, Cambodia's economy has grown annually by about 7 percent. More than 270 Japanese companies do business there in the Southeast Asian country.

PM hails Japan’s role in Kingdom’s development
Ry Sochan | Publication date 22 August 2019 | 23:02 ICT
On the second day of his visit to the Kingdom, Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Norikazu Suzuki met with the prime minister on Thursday, with HE hailing Japan’s role in Cambodia’s development and long-lasting peace.

With Phnom Penh increasingly clogged by the weight of its traffic, the prime minister called on Japanese companies to develop the capital’s transport system, with Japan having conducted a study into the problem.

At a bilateral meeting at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh, HE and Suzuki pledged to further strengthen ties and cooperation.

Suzuki cited Japanese projects that had helped Cambodia, such as the building of National Roads 1 and 5, development projects in the capital, the construction of infrastructures such as drainage and bridges, and the renovation of temples.

Analyst Meas Nee acknowledged Japan’s support for Cambodia. Japan is the second largest provider of loans to the Kingdom after China, with an estimated $1.7 billion provided so far, he said. France was third and South Korea fourth.

Most Japanese assistance came in improving transport and public services, especially in urban expansion, he said.

“But we can see a trend that Japanese aid does not seem to have had a significant influence on the political system in our country.
