Living in South East Asia on $400 USD a month?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

400USD a month is hardly slumming it.

Thats quadruple the salary of a khmer....
Sure, every Khmer makes $100 a month. :-o
More do than dont, some less even.
We understand you have never lived or worked here and don't know anyone here, but there's no need to make up stuff. Many make far more than that, but you'll never meet them as they don't bum around in doss-house hostels. :?
Rich khmers live off the back of the hard working poor khmers.

iirc isnt the minimum wage only applicable to the factory workers, and doesnt count for everyone in other fields of work
Correct I believe.
While this raise is only applicable to factory workers it will effect wages in all sectors all across the country. If 800.000 people in a country with about 16.000.000 people earn a certain minimal wage that effects other sectors and the way other people look at their work and their wages.
The 100$ per months wages BITM sees in the remote areas are history. Cambodia is an extremely inefficient country, making stuff relatively expensive. A lot is more expensive than in neighboring countries. That calls for high(er) wages. Cambodia is in bad spiral of rising prices and rising wages without rising productivity.

To add to the problem is the fact that Cambodia has no control of it's dollar currency, which is what everything is valued in at the import and export destinations and the salaries paid. Just because the USA has a booming economy and a strong dollar does not mean the Cambodian economy will follow.

And you're extrapolating that to support your argument that more Khmer earn less than $100 a month than those who make more than that amount?

I'm going to kindly suggest that you exceeded your daily average expenditure allowance in booze if you think you've actually made a case for that assertion.

Cambodians are not in the lucky fortunate position BITM is in.

If they were in Aussie they would not be writing posts of moaning but of Joy.

I'm not even talking about anyone rich. People who earn quadruple your "$100 a month" or even a bit more. Honest working people with skills. Who the hell do you think are you are anyway, Karl fucking Marx? :o %)
