Cambodian Diplomacy; Strengthening Old Ties, Creating New Ones

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Vietnam visit by Cambodian NA President - important event in Friendship Year
An official visit to Vietnam from September 12 to 14 by President of the Cambodian National Assembly Samdech Heng Samrin is an important political and diplomatic event in the Vietnam - Cambodia Friendship Year 2022 and amid the 55th anniversary of the diplomatic relationship (June 24).
VNA Sunday, September 11, 2022 15:15 https://link.gov.vn/mej8YrEF

After Vietnam and Cambodia set up diplomatic ties on June 24, 1967, their peoples stood side by side in the struggles for national liberation to secure historic victories in the spring of 1975. Vietnam later assisted the patriotic forces and people of Cambodia to topple the Pol Pot genocidal regime, with the triumph on January 7, 1979.

Political ties have been growing as seen in mutual visits, meetings, and discussions in various forms between the countries’ senior leaders, along with increasingly effective collaboration between their ministries, sectors, and localities.

Cambodia News, Phnom Penh: Mr. Pan Sosak, Minister of Commerce, led a delegation from the Ministry of Commerce to meet with Mr. Phil Twyford, New Zealand Minister of Trade and Export Growth, and associates.

The Minister warmly welcomed the New Zealand Minister and his colleagues and thanked the Government of New Zealand for their full support for Cambodia on the occasion of Cambodia's chairmanship of ASEAN in 2022.

He said that during the meeting, the two sides exchanged views and discussed the progress of economic and trade cooperation as part of the negotiations on the improvement of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA Upgrade), one of Cambodia's economic priorities for 2022.

In the end, Cambodia and New Zealand pledged to continue to boost bilateral trade and boost investment growth between the two countries in order to make efforts to recover economically in all areas after the crisis of Covid-19.
UPDATE
New Zealand government press release:
13 September 2022
Phil Twyford to visit Cambodia to boost trade links with South East Asia
Minister of State for Trade and Export Growth Phil Twyford will travel to Cambodia this week to attend the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Economic Ministers’ consultations.

ASEAN is collectively New Zealand’s fourth largest trading partner, with exports in 2021 totalling $6.3 billion, or almost 9% of our total goods exports. The trip comes ahead of the end of year deadline for negotiations on upgrading the ASEAN Australia New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA).

“I look forward to meeting with counterparts across a range of trade meetings, to further strengthen New Zealand’s trade relationship with ASEAN partners and provide greater economic security for New Zealanders,” Phil Twyford said.

“We are committed to working with our ASEAN partners to further boost our already significant economic and trading ties, as both New Zealand and the region recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

“Strong trade links are key in supporting our economic recovery and protecting New Zealanders from the sharp edges of a global economic downturn. Supporting our exporters and ensuring the benefits of trade deliver for all will be front of mind as I meet with my counterparts in Cambodia.

“The ASEAN Economic Ministers’ meeting is an opportunity to advance the region’s economic integration, for instance by upgrading AANZFTA to ensure the Agreement’s rules are modern and fit for purpose. We can take into account lessons learned from COVID-19 and ensure AANZFTA remains ASEAN’s highest quality free trade agreement.

“To deliver on New Zealand’s ambitions for trade, we are seeking the inclusion of chapters covering cooperation on trade and sustainable development, as well as on micro, small and medium-sized enterprises as part of the upgrade. If successful, the trade and sustainable development chapter will be an ASEAN first,” Phil Twyford said.

While in Cambodia Minister Twyford will also attend the East Asia Summit Economic Ministers Meeting, and the first Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Ministerial meeting.

Minister Twyford departs for Cambodia on the 13th of September and will return on the 21st.

Cyprus trade delegation set for first Cambodia visit
Adur Pradeep / Khmer Times

The bilateral and trade relations between Cambodia and Cyprus are set for a significant boost as a trade delegation from Cyprus under the leadership of Larnaka mayor will visit the Kingdom for the first time this week.

Larnaka, a city on the southeast coast of Cyprus, is the third-largest city in the country, after Nicosia and Limassol.

The delegation, led by Andreas Vyras, mayor of Larnaka and President of the Cyprus Municipalities Association, is scheduled to visit the Kingdom from October 8 to 15, an official said.

Tourism is a major source of income for Larnaka as all major travel and tour operators in the world have their presence in the city.

“A delegation comprising government and trade officials from Cyprus is visiting Cambodia for the first time since the establishment of the diplomatic relationship on May 16, 2000,” Salah Essa, Secretary of State and Advisor at the National Committee on Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), told Khmer Times.

Both countries would look to extend cooperation in several fields, including tourism, trades and investments, education, cultural exchange, economic diplomacy, etc, he said.

Cyprus is also expected to announce the establishment of Cambodian honorary consulate in Cyprus during the visit.
