Optimal shopping tour for PP newbie

Post by oopsfermi »

So I'm going to give Phnom Penh a try. Starting with the $150@month apartment and will figure out where I want to live/how much I want to spend later.

I need to do a bunch of shopping on like day two.

My experience with SE Asia has been pretty dismal in this regard. Until Lazada. Lazada absolutely rocks. But Cambodia doesn't have Lazada. So I'm back to hoofing around looking for the shit I need. The thing is, if PP is anything like BKK or MNL it's mall after mall of nearly identical stores all selling the same shit.

Cellphone cases! That's exactly what I was looking for!

Is there a series of malls/markets where one can cover the greatest variety of items for the least amount of effort? For instance in MNL I'd point you at the Robinsons in Ermita, Divisoria and then maybe Chinatown which represent a good variety and are fairly close. Maybe a Greenhills/Gilmore St. combo if computer shit is the need.

I specifically want to focus on cheap furniture. Going to try to go unfurnished on the apt., and I've had great luck with inflatable furniture from Intex (yeah only lasts a few months but cheap and comfortable as fuck and it gives me the time to figure out something more permanent later). And then of course the wok and an omelette pan and a sauce pan. Towels and sheets, yada yada.

Everybody is always talking about the Russian Market; that's like all of the other central markets in KH only bigger? So maybe something high end to complement that? I don't really know what I'm asking I guess, I just dread the thought of running around looking for shit in the sun and not ever finding anything. I literally have nightmares about stuff like that.

Russian Market is a tourist market with prices to match.

$150/mo. apartment means you probably don't want to shop at Aeon.

Give BTK market a shot, it's not far from Russian Market (the other suggestion) but you see a lot more locals there.

PP is like a big country town compared to them.

I don't mind spending on big ticket items if it makes sense.

The general rule is, spend what I want on one-time-only items, and try to spend as little as possible on recurring bills like rent. I will check out Aeon, thanks.

I recall Orussey Market was good for a lot of things the OP wants. Also, for really good quality stainless steel pots and pans, the Thai maker Zebra had a shop on the 3rd or 4th floor of Sorya Shopping Centre. Expensive though.

Well, I just checked out Aeon... can't be more expensive than that.

I put Orussey Market on tomorrow's list. Thanks.
