Learning Khmer from the names.

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Learning Khmer from the names.

Learning Khmer from the names.

My lovely wife was watching a youtube video on diamonds, luckly I remembered that there was Koh Pich, so I asked her how to say Pich (don't know what Koh means (island?).

Anyway it got me thinking... (I know scary). For people whom don't know much Khmer, but are famailliar with many cambodian places they could get a heads up on Khmer by learning what the names mean.

So here goes, what are some place names and their meanings?

(examples.... please correct OK)

Phnom Penh - (Hill of Mrs Penh)?
Siem Reap - Siam (thailand captured)?
Prey Sar - Forest white?
Svay Rieng - something something? Mango?
Meanchey - ???
Toel Kork - ??

You get the idea, please put in your two cents (names) and corrections to the above. Much appreciated.

Thanks.
