The near extinct masked dance of Lakhon Khol was on display recently, thousands of miles away from its birthplace in Cambodia. A group of devoted amateurs brought the ancient dance to the Washington metropolitan. VOA Khmer's Chetra Chap reports.

UNESCO celebrates second anniversary of Cambodian masked theatre’s inclusion to ICH list

UNESCO Phnom Penh Office joined Cambodian people and the Royal Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, especially the Svay Angdet Community, in celebrating the second anniversary of the inscription of the Lkhon Khol of Wat Svay Andet (masked theatre) being listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) List on November 28, 2018.

Lkhon Khol Wat Svay Andet is practiced in one community surrounding a Buddhist monastery, Wat Svay Andet – located about 10km east of Phnom Penh on the Mekong River – and is performed by men wearing masks to the accompaniment of a traditional orchestra and melodious recitation. The specific aim is to propitiate the Neak Ta (guardian spirits of a place and its people), thereby protecting and bringing prosperity to the community, its lands, and harvest. One of the oldest forms of Cambodian performing arts which are considered to have been practiced as early as the Angkor period, a form whose origin is placed in the 9th century in accordance with the bas-reliefs that abound in the galleries of Angkor Wat.

Performed by village troupes during 3 nights, one week after the Khmer New Year (normally on 23, 24, and 25 April) or during ceremonies to worship spirits, Lkhon Khol of Wat Svay Andet is performed to ask for rain or to save villagers from epidemics and illnesses.

According to Pauch Phay, former Principal of Svay Angdet Primary School and one of the Svay Angdet Committee members, during the postponed Khmer New Year in August 2020, the Lkhon Khol Svay Angdet Troupe organized a simple Sam Peah Krou, a ritual before the performance, for praying the Spirits Protector of the Lkhon Khol Svay Angdet Troupe to prevent from COVID 19 for their community and all people in Cambodia. And the troupe organized a special performance with a restricted audience on Sunday 22 November 200, to celebrate its second anniversary of inscription, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, through national TVs and social media.

It has been four years since the Lakhon Khol or Khmer Masked Theatre was placed on the UNESCO Intangible Culture World Heritage List, an event that stirred controversy between the Cambodian and Thai peoples at that time.

This year a performance was held on the afternoon of November 25 with a troupe of Lakhon Khol and the New Generation of Lakhon Khol Youth Traditional Dance Group led by teacher Hang Phumara.

The performance was open to members of the public and free of charge. It gave the audience the opportunity to get to know more about the artistry of Lakhon Khol such as the traditional clothes and musical instruments. In addition to the performances, an exhibition was held at the headquarters of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia in Phnom Penh.

Special Report: Lakhon Bassac Remains in People's Hearts
AKP Phnom Penh, February 04, 2023 --
[excerpts]
Image
There are many types of Khmer theatres that have survived and been preserved to this day. Among them, Lakhon Bassac continues to be valued and appreciated by the masses, especially by middle-aged citizens.

Lakhon Bassac is a form of spoken and sung theatre that incorporates all tastes: comedy, tragedy, singing, dancing, music, almost all at once.
Image
It is known that Khmer ancestors left behind many different art forms besides Lakhon Bassac, such as Yike, Ayai, Chapey Dang Veng, Royal Ballet and many other traditional dances and theatres that represent the soul of the nation.

Regarding the Lakhon Bassac, Ol Sam Ang, Team Leader of the Ol Sam Ang Lakhon Bassac Khmer said it was difficult to compare Lakhon Bassac with other modern art forms, including film, music band, but if the artists have a clear vision, are well organised in accordance with the culture, we can continue to gain support and protect our traditional values.

Image
He said his troupe had just experienced hardships during the two years of the Covid-19 outbreak and that good signs have now returned.
“Before Covid-19, we could have more than 60 performances a year, but the two years of Covid-19 spread were very bad. Now, the situation seems better after the resumption of socio-economic activities,” he affirmed.

Lakhaon Khaol Youth of Cambodia Train Kids for Free
By Heng Sreylin August 23, 2023 8:59 AM

PHNOM PENH – In a move to preserve Khmer ancient arts, the local group Lakhaon Khaol Youth of Cambodia provides free lessons to teach kids and youth the traditional dance of Lakhaon Khaol.

Located near Chuk Meas market, in Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district, a studio established by Lakhaon Khaol Youth of Cambodia provides free training every Sunday morning for around 30 kids.

Khon Chansinan, a professional trainer with 20 years of experience, says the lessons help the next generation understand the art and make sure its techniques are passed on to the youth. Just like Bokator, or the shadow theater, Lakhaon Khaol is part of Cambodia's intangible cultural heritage.
But to be a trainer, one not only has to know the art but also to be patient, said Chansinan.

“Training young children is very difficult. Many times, the instructor explains something but the kids do differently … so we rely on our experience and patience to train the children,” the teacher explained.

Following the announcement that free Lakhaon Khaol lessons were given at his place, he observed that many parents were interested and saw more and more encouragement from parents for their children to learn.

He said he’s been seeing a continuous increase in enthusiasm in his students and feels like the number of trainees is likely to keep increasing in the coming months.
