Troubles in the South of Thailand

This conflict in the south of Thailand has been going on so long that most Thais seem not to notice anymore. It has been a continual stream of small bombs, ambushes, murders of teachers, etc. One of the world's lesser-known war zones. The official death toll since 2004 is 5000 killed in the region, if you can rely on Thai government statistics. The insurgents seem to have shifted tactics and have started to destroy costly government infrastructure now. How will the junta respond?

I expect parts of the south will become a separate, autonomous Muslim state. Sort of like an Islamic version of Israel.
