Yes as with thailand, western scammers abuse the tab system and it is eventually phased out.
i always have tabs in Thailand
and always pay my hotel when i leave

Backpackers there arent trustworthy, they steal each others soap and underwear.

Backpackers have absolutely no shame. They will finish a customer's meal plate after the customer departs. Seen this in Cambodia and Vietnam.

not just Thailand though you try getting a tab in a backpacker bar in Cambodia, same deal

I can confirm that.
I know it was a long time ago, but when I stayed in a Backpackers dorm I never wore underwear as a safeguard so they couldn't be stolen.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
