Kampong Speu, Cambodia news: It has been reported that at 3:30 pm, on August 26, 2018, a group of four young boys were playing together when they discovered a M79 grenade, and one of them picked it up.
The grenade exploded killing a 10 year old boy, and seriously injuring the other three boys who were taken to Kampong Speu hospital.
The accident occurred at the site of the ACO army base in Tang Sia commune, Phnom Sruoch district, Kampong Speu province.

According to Yas Dina, a military base commander at Phnom Sruoch district, the four victims have been identified as:
1. Heng male, 10 years old
2, Soun Roth, male, 12
3, Yem Pur, male, 9,
4, Yem Mok, male, 6 years old.

Two boys killed after UXO explosion

Two boys died and two others were hurt on Sunday after they accidentally detonated an unexploded M79 shell on a mountain in Kampong Speu province’s Phnom Sruoch district, police said yesterday.

District police chief Say Bunthon said yesterday that the boys were herding cows on the mountain when they came across the shell and hit it with a rock to remove the shell head as a souvenir.

“There are several unexploded ordnances scattered in the area but no one knows exactly where,” Mr Bunthon said. “The four boys found the M79 shell and wanted to use its head to attach to a cow collar.”

“One of them hit it with a rock and it exploded, instantly killing one of them and injuring the others,” he added. Provincial police identified one dead boy as Ngol Taingheng, 10, who was killed instantly. The other dead boy, Soun Rath, 12, died after being sent to the provincial hospital.

Mr Bunthon said another boy Yem Svet, nine, was seriously injured and sent to hospital while the fourth boy Yem Khmao, six, only suffered minor injuries.

That's terrible. And even more terrible that 10 and 12 year old kids don't know better than to play with UXOs they find lying about. Hopefully, there will be some more talks in schools and from parents to educate kids not to touch this sort of stuff.
