Cambodia defeats UAE to win gold in women's 49 kg ju-jitsu at Asian Games

Cambodia's Jessa Khan defeated the United Arab Emirates' Alhinaai Mahra to win gold in the Newaza Women's 49kg ju-jitsu event on Friday at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

Margarita Ochoa from the Philippines - who dominated last year's Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan - was a favorite to win gold but lost her quartefinal match to Duong Thi Thanh Minh of Vietnam.

Ochoa won the bronze against compatriot Kaila Napolis, who had lost to Khan.

This is Cambodia's only medal at the competition so far, while the UAE has won two golds and three silver medals.

Reminder about why this is a big deal for Cambodia: This will be Cambodia's second medal EVER in the Asian Games, after Sorn Seavmey's mythic Gold in 2014.

At the last edition of the games in Incheon, South Korea, in 2014, Taekwondo star Sorn Seavmey was the team’s sole medalist bringing the country’s 44-year wait for an Asian Games medal to an end and catapulting herself to superstar status.

Jakarta (FN), August 24 - Cambodia won the gold medal at the 18th Asian Asian Games in Indonesia.

The first gold medal of Cambodia for Asian Games 2018 was won by American-Cambodian female athelete Khan Jessa after beating Alhinaai Mahra from the United Arab Emirates in Jujutsu game - a Japanese martial art using close combat for defeating an armed and armored opponent, with only a short weapon or none at all.

Vath Chamroeun, Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), said that this is another pride for the Cambodian athletic for winning second gold medal in a history of the Asian Games following the first one by Sorn Seavmey in the 17th Asian Games held in South Korea 2014.

Is there a Jiu Jitsu dojo in Phnom Penh? That's a righteous martial art and I'd be very keen to sign up for classes.
