I think that's more in context of their position and power in the world, their influence and progressing their culture/status. The quality of their building and associated infrastructure is another kettle of fish imo.

Sorta reminds me of what happened in Pattaya in the 80s and 90s. Sewerage from condos/resorts dumped straight out to the sea and polluting the beaches and many swimmers getting ear infections.

Probably a good thing (the relative gradualness of the decline). The Chinese stock market was quite frothy. As patient as the Chinese population has been towards their government (no choice, really), they really don't understand or expect investment losses as their market has only gone up and up over 30 years and they will revolt if their investments go belly up. Western investors have experienced several dramatic, long term stock market corrections/recessions in their lifetimes so it's not as much of a shock when it happens to them. Many Chinese haven't had to learn how to diversify portfolios yet. The first major, major stock market collapse and real estate value collapse will rock the Communist Party like nothing they have seen since Mao. And then blood will spill.

But this recent downturn in Chinese stock market mostly due to Trump's trade war hysteria and can quickly resolve back to the lofty levels if some trade deal is reached and Trump can declare political victory, even if it means the Chinese only agree to buy 2% more soybeans or some other irrelevancy.

Maybe the same thing will happen to the chinese as what happened to the japanese in the late 80s and early 90s. Remember the fears of the japanese taking over the world back then? Well, they had a huge asset bubble and it all came crashing down..

You are thinking from a Western perspective. To a Chinese investor who has borrowed money to invest in Alibaba or Tencent or whatever the hot local stock of the month is, it absolutely IS real life. It's life and death. There are no social welfare/social security programs in China. Lose your family's savings in China and you're completely buggered in your later years.

No overall city planning, so it's basically it's up to the individual. Call your plumber, but what can he do about blocked city drains and rainy season flooding ?

I thought major sewer/water improvements are starting early next year in Sihanoukville (some parts already under construction). New power plants are under construction as well. Also roads are being widen and new ones built all the time. And all the bigger projects have big underground parking garages as well. But yeah, I agree city planning the infrastructure is lagging behind.

Well to be fair, Sihanoukville is ahead of the capital in that it has any sewage treatment plant. I'm not aware of any near Phnom Penh. It seems the idea is for each building to have their own septic tank and for the run off and all drains to run down into the shrinking Boueng Tumpun, and onwards into the Bassac and through the Mekong Delta and eventually the South China Sea. Friends who have been down in the delta have said some parts are horrifically polluted.
