Built in the mid 1960s. First report I read said it had been upgraded in (I think) 2016 but that has since been deleted from the updated article.

On the Beep they are saying that it was indeed refurbished in 2016 and that there were “road strengthening” works going on at the time of the accident.

On a related note I see that the repairs of the PP Japan Friendship Bridge is entailing the demolition and rebuilding of the entire deck.

They were doing works for bringing up to standards that section at the time of collapse, obviously too late, possibly the works being done on the foundation of the structure are the cause of the collapse coupled with the weather.

Latest reports say the design was prone to wear & degradation in the extreme and one guy even predicted the bridge falling one day.
