At the interview (Source: VNA)

Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnamese army was instrumental in defeating the Khmer Rouge regime, changing history in Cambodia, according to Executive Director of the Documentation Centre of Cambodia Youk Chhang.

In a recent interview with Vietnam News Agency, Chhang said many Cambodians fleeing the genocidal regime had told the world about the catastrophe, but no country was willing to interfere. He added that he had collected several documents proving that Amnesty International tried to negotiate with Khmer Rouge in 1976, but it came to failure. Therefore, genocide had to be ended by military force and the Vietnam People’s Army is the only one in the region that could deal with it.

He said but for Vietnam’s help, Cambodia would have become a dictatorial country.

On the life sentence given to ex-leaders of Khmer Rouge Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphon, Chhang said it marks an end to Khmer Rouge regime from the legal aspect. The next task is ending the regime via education which he said is especially important for Cambodian people to look toward the future while not forgetting lessons of the past.

Gee that would have been bad. Imagine someone running the country for their own benefit and for family and friends at the expense of everyone else.

So lucky....... =@

Youk Chhang keeps up the good work at the Documentation Centre of Cambodia (DC-Cam). On Friday, the history center received a large number of new documents on the Khmer Rouge, which will eventually be made available to the public.

Documentation Centre of Cambodia (DC-Cam) director Youk Chhang considers the new documents on contemporary Cambodian history, especially during Pol Pot’s Democratic Kampuchea regime provided by Julio A Jelres as very valuable.

Jelres was the former personal secretary and history writer of the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk and senior researcher at Monash University’s School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies.

It is a historical document, Chhang said, and important for the current society, especially for the public, researchers, students and teachers to use. He made his comments after DC-Cam received the documents from Jelres.

Chhang said among the documents DC-Cam received on Friday were books, pictures, films, photographs, CDs, picture frames and study documents on the Khmer Rouge which weighed over a tonne.

The historical documents will contribute to the education of youths, research studies, and public interest, and help increase the effectiveness of teaching Khmer history.

He said: “We will maintain the documents as digital copies and distribute them to our research groups which cooperate with the Ministry of Education in six centres in Cambodia.

“We will also copy them on computers for online distribution so the public can see and read them. We will maintain the original documents rather than provide analyses of them, so the public, students and teachers will find it easier to carry out research.”

More on the documents that Mr. Julio A. Jeldres has given to the Documentation Centre of Cambodia (DC-Cam):

Declassified Norwegian and Swedish diplomatic documents donated to Cambodia
by Zazithorn Ruengchinda • December 14, 2019 •

Hundreds of declassified diplomatic reports on Cambodia’s contemporary history from Norway, Sweden, Australia, Britain, Canada, France, New Zealand and Switzerland are among the documents that former Chilien ambassador and a senior private secretary and official biographer to late King Father Norodom Sihanouk, Mr. Julio A. Jeldres, has given to the Documentation Centre of Cambodia (DC-Cam).

Mr. Jeldres collected the documents over 50 years of diplomatic and private involvement in Cambodia’s recent history. In total, the archives comprise over 1,580 kilograms of priceless historical documents and materials. It doesn’t say how he obtained the Swedish and Norwegian diplomatic reports and if they have been declassified by their home countries.

“DC-Cam is exceptionally grateful for and honoured by Mr Jeldres’ generous donation, which will contribute to the education of Cambodian youths, scholars and the public. we aims to improve the effectiveness of teaching Cambodian contemporary history, and in particular, the Khmer Rouge period,””

Ambassador Jeldres completed the manuscript of a book on the history of the friendship between late King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia and Prime Minister Zhou Enlai of the People’s Republic of China.

“We also worked to translate a diary kept by Queen Mother Norodom Monineath during her trip to liberated zones of Cambodia in 1973.”

Youk Chhang, executive director of DC-Cam said that the documents and materials donated by Mr Jeldres will contribute to the Kingdom’s democracy and civic culture.

“I think history is very important to develop the nation,” Mr Chhang said.
