I couldn't tell you it's origins without googling, but I did hear it first from my parents, both of whom were academics and attended Oxford.

Honestly, which part is not clear, Punchy?

I believe that most people who use that quote don't know who said it, or the context in which is was made.

I'm an educator, and the quote is usually used to heap scorn on educators.

My comment was more of a 'does it really matter, dont take it to heart' kind of post, I didn't realise until after it might get taken a different way,

My only point was the childish name calling is going it trigger a childish argument, it was a failed attempt from me to try to defuse the situation

To be honest, Jamie probably noticed your abrasive nature as of late and wanted to nip this in the bud. You're similar to your kindred spirit, That Genius, in that you're an argumentative barnacle that will never give up the last word which can really derail threads.

Did you ever get an instructive response to that 'dog shit' thread you started? I don't think so and I have my suspicions as to why.

You came across as very contentious which is off-putting and probably precluded some posters from adding to the discussion.

Start a thread and let it simmer like a nice crock-pot stew. Then come back to it later, take what was useful, ignore what isn't, say thanks and be on your way, instead of hovering over it and instantly replying with an overly critical, petulant hand to any reply that rubs you the wrong way.
