French Drug Smuggler Deported After 18 Years Jail in Indonesia
Indonesia deports French drug smuggler after 18 years
July 22, 2018 01:00
By Agence France-Presse
A Frenchman who served 18 years in custody for smuggling drugs into Bali was deported Saturday in a case that sparked outrage in his native country over Indonesia's tough narcotics laws.
AFP
Police arrested Michael Blanc on the day after Christmas in 1999 at the tropical island's airport with 3.8 kilogrammes (8.4 pounds) of hashish hidden inside scuba diving canisters.
The now 45-year-old was originally given a life term -- narrowly escaping the death sentence handed to some other foreign drug traffickers, including two members of the notorious Bali Nine who were executed in 2015.
Blanc's prison term was later cut to 20 years and then in 2014 he won something that few foreigners get in Indonesia -- parole.
The former cook arrived at the airport in Jakarta escorted by Indonesian immigration officials, and accompanied by his mother, Helene Le Touzey, who gave up her life in France to spend nearly two decades in Indonesia campaigning for his release.
The two departed on a Turkish Airlines flight at 9 pm local time (1400 GMT). They are expected in France on Sunday.

So tired of hearing about murderers (drug dealers ) from first-world countries whining about their hard-done by exploits whilst literally thousands of locals were executed.
Fake liberal trash, oooh, somebody called a black guy a nigger or criticised Kim Kardashian or a gay in NY or California, but they support the apartheid/Nazi state in Israel or the Saudi scumbags practising genocide in Yemen with arms they bought from aforementioned fake liberal trash.
It doesn't wash anymore. Go home.

Of course, all drug smuggling is BAD, but can't help wondering why smuggling hashish would get you a harsher penalty than smuggling methamphetamine. Whatever you think about drugs, hashish does not kill people.that genius wrote: ↑Sun Jul 22, 2018 6:18 pm So tired of hearing about murderers (drug dealers ) from first-world countries whining about their hard-done by exploits whilst literally thousands of locals were executed.
In this case, the French guy did 18 years (of a life sentence) for smuggling 3.8kgs of hash.
But another French guy got 'only' 15 years for smuggling 3+ kgs of ice.(in 2014) Both cases were in Bali.Police arrested Michael Blanc on the day after Christmas in 1999 at the tropical island's airport with 3.8 kilogrammes (8.4 pounds) of hashish hidden inside scuba diving canisters.
Francois Giuily, 49, was arrested in January at Bali airport with more than 3kg of the drug, also known as Ice, hidden in two plastic bags in his suitcase lining, prosecutors said.
Customs officials said at the time of his arrest that the drugs had a street value of about US$500,000.
A court in the Balinese capital Denpasar yesterday sentenced him to 15 years in jail, lighter than the 17-year term demanded by prosecutors.

He was smuggling hashish, I don't recall anyone ever dying from that unless a large volume fell on them. I'm not sure where home is anymore either, I'm quite settled here though and won't be moving anywhere anytime soon.that genius wrote: ↑Sun Jul 22, 2018 6:18 pm So tired of hearing about murderers (drug dealers ) from first-world countries whining about their hard-done by exploits whilst literally thousands of locals were executed.

Seems a harsh sentence for hash but I always have to think what are these people thinking - if you can't do the time don't do the crime - you need your head examined to traffic drugs(even recreational) through another countries airport, this isn't the 60's when you could fill a surfboard up and take it through.

Given the history of SE Asia regarding drugs, it's a worthy war.
