Re: Honesty in a Hostess Bar
Thank YOU for sharing this. Happened to me more then once In Cambodiataranis wrote:Last night I was in City Bar on Street 110 with my friend and after a drink I left him there, he stayed till 4am. Today he told me a girl in the bar found a bundle of cash on the floor of the bar and handed it over to the cashier, the cashier asked my friend if it was his, he checked his pocked and it was empty, it was indeed his cash of $160.
She duly handed it over in a great case of honesty and bought them a few drinks each and some cash for their honesty. A piece of good news in the city of Phnom Penh.
I'll give ya 500 Riel for it...

Very good to hear this. Golly, if a hostess bar can have integrity maybe it will catch on elsewhere...

Re: Honesty in a Hostess Bar
A young man in Sesame Noodle in TTP recently came and told me that last time I was in I tipped $10 and he knew I normally tipped $1 - apparently the staff had held the note until they saw me again to ask if I'd made a mistake and wanted it back. I did leave the note in error, and the staff were a little bemused when I thanked them for their honesty and told them to share the tenner.

On the flip side, we make a practice out of handing money back when we're given too much change. The locals look at us like we're morons when we do this.

Yeah, I do that too. One cashier a St 51 bar was pretty grateful as it would have come out of her salary ($10). Same at Riverside Bistro one time. Another time I was buying phone credit and the guy handed me the $5 card and I noticed it was actually 3X $5 cards folded and sticking together so well that he hadn't picked up on it. He seemed quite conflicted to me, grateful but also acutely embarrassed was my take.StroppyChops wrote:On the flip side, we make a practice out of handing money back when we're given too much change. You really do need to check every transaction as I've been overcharged and short-changed in the same transaction at one St 19 drink shop that I will never go back to. Another time I dropped a few dollars on the ground in Psar Chas as I was paying for something. The young girl who was serving me spotted it and picked it up and gave it back - I gave her a tip for that, fantastic.
There are a few places that I would shut my mouth though if they gave me too much change, but I no longer go to their establishments so very unlikely to happen.

Re: Honesty in a Hostess Bar
In general we've been really impressed with acts of honesty in this country. I've dropped my wallet once at the previous apartment, and left it behind once at a restaurant where we're known, and on both occasions it's been returned to me with correct weight. Both times the returners have been very keen that I check the contents and also refused a reward.

Biker wallet with chain and it never gets lost. Not just for bikers, but also old farts (like me) who leave their wallet on counters when exiting a business. It also frustrates pick-pockets to no end.

Yes, this^^^. LOL. Not to mention passports left at airport duty-free shops, backpacks at restaurants, and oh a couple of times leaving without paying the bill. This getting old thing is tiring . . .Sailorman wrote:Biker wallet with chain and it never gets lost.
