Upcoming elections next month...

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Upcoming elections next month...

Post by Kampuchia Crumbs »

Curious, since I am not currently in KOW.

With about a month to go leading up to the elections has there been any changes seen on the streets yet? (campaigning, protesting, election posters etc)

Any predictions? What do most of you do on election day (stay inside out of sight?). Is anyone or their family worried this time?

No change

Nothing unexpected will happen

It will be fine...it's a Sunday, so relaxation day anyway.

Rumours of Monday being granted as a holiday to accommodate those travelling long distances to vote.

Nothing unusual will happen. The government and electoral body have ensured fair and free elections and are working hard to keep the many threats to Cambodia's sovereignty at bay, with great efficacy.

Interesting side note: Return flights from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh in July and August are super cheap.

Checked a few weeks ago. For pre-election July VietJet was only serving Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 199,000 VND/$9US per leg (plus plus). With full 7-day service after the election. Now, VJ has erased all its booking dates for August. LOL

Cambodia Angkor Air also has super cheap flights for HCMC-PNH in July and August, ranging $1US to $20US.

The election has spooked the travelling public, it seems.

what election? :stir:
its a shame as there is no opposing party that will get more than a few votes

The opposition?
As there is only one key player, you’ve probably deduced by now that there’s not much in the way of opposition in this election.

While Cambodia technically has dozens of political parties, only two parties have shown an ability to mobilise large numbers of voters – HE’s own Cambodia People’s Party (CPP) and the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP), which took 48 percent and 44 percent of the popular vote, respectively, in the 2013 national election. The next runner-up, the royalist Funcinpec party, captured just 3.7 percent of the vote, failing to win a single seat after a decades-long slide into irrelevance.

richard, what is your view on US elections?

Last election, you had a choice between some psycho Dem lying scammer and a candidate even Republicans didn't want to endorse.

What kind of a broken system gives such choices?

One could reasonably deduce that the US also has very little opposition.

Almost impossible for an Independent to raise the advertising time/cash Rothschild can.

So while your point may be valid, maybe it's time to remove the log first.

What's plus plus these days, about $200?

Perfect.... absolutely perfect.....

From what people have commented, it would appear that that is exactly what's going to happen with this election....

I went through the online flight purchase and the final total adds up to 2.5 million VND or $110US. Pretty cheap for PP, whether going from HCMC or Bangkok.
