Re: ATM Fees & Obtaining a Local Bank Account
Which are the best ATMs to use then? who charges the smallest fee? $5-10 is far too much a charge! Whats the pull limit per transaction? Or does that vary between banks, because that would need to be factored in to deduce which machines are the best value?Kammekor wrote: ↑Wed Jun 20, 2018 3:05 pmEU ATM card, charged. But last time was I used it was in about 2014 I guess. Maybe they made it free again..... Just maybe....Nobby Stiles wrote: ↑Wed Jun 20, 2018 3:01 pmMay i ask your nationality please as i heard a STORY that only American ATM cards were now being charged a fee at Canadia bank ATMs but British and European cards were still fee free? Can anyone confirm this????Kammekor wrote: ↑Wed Jun 20, 2018 8:36 amThat used to be correct, in 2009, maybe 2010. Now they charge 5-10 USD if I remember correctly. After introducing that kind of fee they went of my radar.Nobby Stiles wrote: ↑Wed Jun 20, 2018 2:45 am Also when i first visited Cambodia many years ago i was told that Canadia Bank there did not charge a local fee for using their ATMs with a foreign card, is this correct and still the case????
Hate being charged to access my own money, its just a double hit with the exchange rate too!

Yes bank transfers will be my goal but will have some cash on arrival to change!Kammekor wrote: ↑Wed Jun 20, 2018 3:24 pmAround the Central Market (Psar Thmey) you will the places with the best rates. Check the bills they give you thoroughly though, if you receive damaged bills those will be denied by the bank and most sellers. You might also consider transferring Pounds from your UK account into your new Cambodian account.Nobby Stiles wrote: ↑Wed Jun 20, 2018 3:16 pmYes cash is definitely king! But as you've mentioned somewhat risky to stash or carry large amounts of cash around, but when i do finally arrive there i will have some cash (declared £) with me that i would be looking to change up and get into a bank account asap.
In the meantime i will have it safely (hopefully) plotted up in a Pax safe in the Guesthouse safe, this family guesthouse has been my home in PP on all my recent visits and was a recommendation from a longtime personal friend of the family, so I'm fairly confidant it'll be safe.
This leads me on to my next question, where is a money changers in PP that i can change my £ Sterling into US $ at a decent rate, preferably better than that i can get here in the Uk?
Regards
Mr N Stiles
Thanks for the info!
Re: ATM Fees & Obtaining a Local Bank Account
I don't know. I stopped using my EU ATM cards a few years ago. Too expensive. In Thailand about 180 THB to get 18.000 THB and in Cambodia 5-10 USD to get 500 USD. Local cards provide me with free withdrawals.
Withdrawal limits are hard to predict. The limit can be set by the bank in Cambodia, but also by your bank back home.

Wow...Nobby, you are thinking way too much about this...K.I.S.S...
Bring enough cash to get you through first couple weeks
Open bank account with ABA, set up internet banking and mobile app
Transfer money from home bank acct to ABA acct via SWIFT transfer
Use ABA card in ABA ATMs to withdraw cash as needed, no fees.
Simple

Re: ATM Fees & Obtaining a Local Bank Account
So what happens if i lose my one ATM card from ABA bank on a Friday evening? Yes they will issue me a replacement but when??? Sorry mate but i don't really think you can overthink your financial situation when moving abroad! I like to have a few cost effective options in place for when the shit hits the fan! And just because I've found a few along the way i never stop looking!PSD-Kiwi wrote: ↑Wed Jun 20, 2018 6:23 pm Wow...Nobby, you are thinking way too much about this...K.I.S.S...

Re: ATM Fees & Obtaining a Local Bank Account
If you lose your card, use the app to issue a virtual card which enables you to withdraw money from an ABA ATM....BOOOOM!
Or, just go into the bank on Sat morning, ABA are open till midday on Saturdays.
Or, just don't lose your card
But, if you're really that worried about losing your card, open an account with another local bank with some backup funds for the weekend, just in case.

Re: ATM Fees & Obtaining a Local Bank Account
my ABA is linked to an old number, so i cant verify it on my latest phone/number, is there a way around this? like going into the bank and asking them to change my number on my file and to re set up my app? have i answered my own question?PSD-Kiwi wrote: ↑Wed Jun 20, 2018 10:32 pm If you lose your card, use the app to issue a virtual card which enables you to withdraw money from an ABA ATM....BOOOOM!
