How do you know it’s the thief’s FB account and not someone who has just bought a second hand phone? A penny pays a pound that the thief sold it on to a phone shop then someone else has bought it.

Agree, but receiving stolen good is also a crime in many countries.
As long as he can reliably detail who he bought it from, he's safe, and the original provider is in the poop
