Guy busted with weed pays off cops.

Post by Kung-fu Hillbilly »

A TA member recounts his drug bust story a few days ago.

I was in Sihanouk. I went to the happy pizza place and although I bought no Pizza, I asked the proprietor if I could take just the 'happy' home with me. He was happy enough to sell me small bag. I returned to my room and smoked a few joints: A great luxury after a year in China without so much as a flake!

The next day, I jumped on the motor to head back to Phnom Penh. Against all my better judgement, experience and just plain sense, I took the weed and stuffed it in my knapsack. I felt lucky. Ha!

Well sure enough, the guy who sold me the weed notified the cops. They had a checkpoint, they saw me coming. I was conspicuously singled out. The cop searched the bike. He kept asking me if I had any weed. I denied. He sat me down and started going through my pack. "Do you have ganja" he'd say "No, no" I'd reply and so on. "Just tell me now and we can settle it" he'd say. "No, no" I'd reply. It was clear that he knew I was holding. Well he dug deeper into my satchel and eventually he found it. A very grave look came over him. He shook his head and then brought me into the back of the roadside tent. More of his fellows gathered. We were now at level two.

As one should do in Cambodia, I calmly and politely told him how sorry I was; how I had no idea that I had been breaking the law. I (in my most ingratiating tone) requested that he accept my remorseful apology and allow me to simplify the matter and pay the fine right then and there.

The funniest part was when he made me sign the 'statement' He opened a manila envelope which contained a stack of the 'confessions'. I managed to glimpse at a couple of them. Joe Blow, American, smoked pot, Tom Thumb from Britain etc. I was handed a blank sheet told to write my name and statement down. This is where I risked taking the piss because I knew these guys probably didn't read English and obviously the 'statement' was merely a mock formality. So I wrote "I don't know what this is about, and I've never used drugs in Asia", then scribbled a signature. Next he placed the sack of ganja on the letter and took a photo with his phone. He does this ten times a week or more. I have no doubt.

Next thing was to go to the ATM. They were so kind as to drive me. The Chief held on to my bike key, my pack and my $200. The other cop switched to a civvy jacket and drove me on the back of his moto to the ATM. I grabbed the $300 and we headed back. Big cop sat me down, said "Give me the money" I handed it over. He counted it, then he politely said "You can go now" and handed me my stuff.

As I jumped on the bike to get the hell out of there, he reminded me in a friendly tone "Don't forget your helmet sir!" And put his finger to his lips in a conspiratorial "hush hush" gesture.

And all this time he never once even looked at my passport or IDs.

My conclusion? I asked for it. Buy the weed, maybe smoke it, but only in your room. Never be dumb enough to carry it with yo

LOL. Sounds highly unlikely. Did the pizza guy put a GPS tracker in the bag or what ? Why wait until the next day ? Why didn't the cops just go to his room instead of setting up a roadblock ?
People will post some strange stuff to make themselves interesting. :Yahoo!:

Yeah, I had some doubt as to its validity. I probably shouldn't have posted it.

Though the bit about writing the letter in english rings a bit true, I once wrote porn star in my occupation on that little form you fill in when crossing the Poipet border, scribbled my name illegibly. Childish but made me grin.

Tons of weed in China and there is a menu: AK, OG, Orange Crush and a specialty every week or so.

Road blocks? Please...The guy's a dreamer, but in my book, instant fines are better than a wasting of police and court time, and prison space.
