Honest Thailand - US Tourist Forgets Money Bag in Taxi

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Some tourists deserve what happens to them.

Cabbie returns B153,000 to forgetful Japanese tourist
11 Jan 2019
A taxi driver has returned cash worth about 153,000 baht to a Japanese passenger who left his purse in the cab in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok.

Somporn Joynusaeng on Friday returned the bag containing money, in Thai and Japanese currency, to the 29-year-old Japanese man at FM 91 traffic radio station.

The cabbie said the tourist hailed his taxi on Soi Sukhumvit 24 on Tuesday night and asked him to drive along the soi to pick up two more Japanese men near the Emporium shopping centre. He then drove them to Soi Cowboy, Sukhumvit 23.

He then planned to return to his home in Navakhon area, Pathum Thani.

While his vehicle was waiting for a traffic light at Bot Mae Phra intersection, a woman opened the back door and got inside. Before she could give her destination, the woman saw the small bag on the seat and drew his attention to it.

Mr Somporn decided to refuse the passenger and asked for the bag. He immediately drove back to Sukhumvit 23 and cruised around the area hoping to see the three tourists.

He then drove along Soi Sukhumvit 24, as he thought one of them might be looking there for his lost bag. He drove around for about 30 minutes, but did not see any of them.

So he called FM91 traffic radio, told them about the purse and then went to the radio station to hand it in. The purse contained yen and baht notes worth about 153,000 baht, Thai media reported.

“I felt troubled after seeing the bag and the cash. I don't want to keep lost money, I would be afraid of being charged. I can earn more than 100,000 baht a year driving a taxi. If I was put in jail for one year, I would not earn a single baht. Worse still, my family would be in trouble,’’ Mr Somporn said.

The 29-year-old tourist, who declined to be named, said through an interpreter that he was shocked to find the purse missing and never thought he may have left it in the cab. He thought he lost it while walking along Soi Sukhumvit 23.

He thanked Mr Somporn for his honesty and gave the driver a 5,000 baht reward.

Thai/Indian honesty: Brit tourist gets 255,000 baht back from overpaid curry bill
12 April 2019
A group of British tourists said they would definitely be coming back to Krabi again after 255,000 baht was repaid to them following a mix-up at an Indian restaurant.

Mr Simon, 48, and ten friends from the UK went to the Punjab Palace for dinner on Tuesday. The restaurant is situated on Nopparat Thara beach.

After their curries Simon paid the 2,857 baht bill on his credit card and pressed OK. In reality he had pressed 257,857.12 by mistake and thus overpaid the restaurant by 255,000 and a few satang.

The party of tourists left and the manageress Aporn, 32, only noticed the error when she was doing the takings at closing time. Her Indian husband was alerted and he took off on his Vespa to try and find the tourists but to no avail.

So Aporn went to the police. The tourist police and Krabi immigration managed to track down the party to a hotel in nearby Ao Nang but the tourists had gone out for the day.

They were clearly unaware that they were in the “vindaloo”.

A message was left and soon Mr Simon and several friends turned up to receive back the overpaid portion of the bill. A ceremony was held with police to celebrate the honesty of all concerned.

Sanook reported that the tourists were all overjoyed and thoroughly impressed with the Thais and the Indian owner and would definitely be coming back to Krabi again.

Sanook used the term “Amazing Thailand” in their headline.

Thaivisa would like to point out that we translated this story with no intent to curry favor with anyone.

A British tourist has been repaid Bt255,000 following an accidental over-payment at an Indian restaurant in Krabi this week. The 48-year-old British man, identified only as Simon, and his 10 friends, went to a restaurant near Noppara Thara Beach in Krabi on Tuesday night for dinner. After they have finished the meal Simon put the Bt2,857 bill on his credit card. But an amount of 257,857.12 was entered in error and Simon entered his PIN, pressed OK and signed the receipt without checking. He did not realise that he had overpaid the restaurant by about Bt255,000.

The manager Aporn Sarem, 32, noticed the error at closing time when she was checking the accounts. Her Indian husband tried to search for the British tourists but was unable to find them. Aporn contacted Krabi tourist police and Krabi immigration who managed to track down the tourists at a hotel nearby in Ao Nang. Simon received the overpaid amount yesterday, in cash. He and his friends said thank you to the restaurant proprietors and said they would definitely be coming back to Krabi again.Source: Thethaiger.com

They never teach them to put it in their pockets for example! it is disguisting!
I somehow doubt you know any Cambodians, that's a bunch of nonsense.
Don't worry, Hernàndez, not everyone is in complete denial. The rest of us know the truth and aren't afraid to speak it.

Hey JB, this is probably a good question for an urbane man-of-the-world like you.
Why do you reckon some of the posters here take so much pride in boasting of;

their total inability to adapt to living in Cambodia,
the 1001 ways the are dumb enough to get ripped off,
and that they are only capable of meeting/marrying/doing biz - with arseholes.

I just don't get it. If I was that hopeless at the basics of expat life I would not be trumpeting it to the universe.
'Any guidance?
