Is depression and suicide a curse of the rich?
Re: Is depression and suicide a curse of the rich?
Most literature indicates that depression and suicide increases with lower SES, although admittedly it is distributed through all socioeconomic levels. I think you will find that the expat suicides here are more correlated with less affluent people that have social and economic issues. Plenty of literature on depression and suicide vs ses, for example:newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 7:53 am
It seems like quite a few foreigners keep killing themselves in the KOW. Generally because they have been dealing with depression for a long time and now called it quits. Usually, they have it all - good job, family, special someone, etc. and then end it all.
Suicide rates across income levels: Retrospective cohort data on 1 million participants collected between 2003 and 2013 in South Korea
We found that the hazard ratios of suicide showed an increasing trend as socioeconomic position decreased. After adjusting for gender, age, geographic location, and disability level, Medicaid recipients had the highest suicide hazard ratio (2.28; 95% CI, 1.87–2.77). Among the Medicaid recipients, men had higher hazard ratios than women (2.79; 95% CI, 2.17–3.59 vs. 1.71; 95% CI, 1.25–2.34). Hazard ratios also varied across age groups. The highest hazard ratio was found in the 40–59-year-old group (3.19; 95% CI, 2.31–4.43), whereas the lowest ratio was found in those 60 years and older (1.44; 95% CI, 1.09–1.87). https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a ... 4017300382
Poverty, Mental Illness and Suicide Linked
Researchers have documented a connection between low socioeconomic status (low SES, or those who are poor) and the likelihood of also being diagnosed with a mental illness or having attempted suicide.
The researchers also found that a decrease in a person’s income level is also associated with a higher risk for anxiety and mood disorders, as well as a higher rate of substance use.https://psychcentral.com/news/2011/04/0 ... 25013.html
Relationship Between Household Income and Mental Disorders
Low levels of household income are associated with several lifetime mental disorders and suicide attempts, and a reduction in household income is associated with increased risk for incident mental disorders. Policymakers need to consider optimal methods of intervention for mental disorders and suicidal behavior among low-income individuals.https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaps ... cle/211213

Simply, it's just more interesting here. In the mining town that Mrs Stroppy and I come from in Australia, the media and the medical industry are forbidden by law to release information on suicide rates because a) they are so high and b) the suicides are more than 90% men - and certain agendas don't want questions asked about why so many men in high-paid jobs are committing suicide. Short answer - they lose hope.JohnLeonard wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 8:41 am Its really alarming.
Whats it that makes KOW place that attracts all these suicides, i have never seen this rate of suicides and deaths of foreigners in other SEA country apart from Thailand which i have never been and have no idea about it.

So it's as fucked up in Australia as it is in the USA.the media and the medical industry are forbidden by law to release information on suicide rates
Do Aussies go on and on about their freedoms like Americans do?

Nope, hardly ever. That's almost solely a US behaviour.AmericanSteve wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 6:03 pmSo it's as fucked up in Australia as it is in the USA.the media and the medical industry are forbidden by law to release information on suicide rates

Enterprising trollbait. If one lived in Turkmenistan, 25 years ago, with a 50kb/sec connection in your cousin's house.
Today? Weak.
