I think that concept was dropped when most pumps went from mechanical to digital. I believe those stations also display $ or dollars and l or litres\liters. I also forgot that gas prices are not 0.89/l but now $1.01/l.

Some sellers of the petrol at those stands with soft drink bottles have a gimmick that makes them more money.
They pour in a epoxy resin and roll the bottle around to coat the inside. Leave it to harden then fill with petrol. Can save half a cup per litre bottle thus greater profit margin.
