Cambodia Ranked 26th for Biggest Troop Contributing Countries for UN Peacekeeping Missions

Cambodia has dispatched over 6,000 blue-helmet troops for the United Nations peacekeeping missions since 2006 in an effort that earns the Kingdom 26th place among 30 biggest troop deploying countries for UN missions.
The figure was made known by Samdech Tea Banh, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, while co-chairing official conclusion of the Training Capsule on UN Peacekeeping Operations and Demining with Ambassador of India to Cambodia H.E. Ms. Manika Jain in Phnom Penh this morning.

Phnom Penh (FN), Sept. 10 – Cambodian Minister of Foreign Affairs Prak Sokhonn, also head of the National Committee for the Coordination of Sending Peacekeepers to UN Mission, recognized that Cambodian peacekeepers are facing danger during the humanitarian mission abroad under the framework of the United Nations.
The statement was made Tuesday, presiding over the farewell ceremony for the construction-engineering unit 495 deploying to Central African Republic and demolition of malfunction ordnances, held at Training School for Multinational Peacekeeping Forces in Kampong Speu province.
“Our today’s [peacekeeping] mission is dangerous. There was not much danger when we first sent our deminers. However, nowadays the situations have changed with complexity, particularly in Mali and Central African Republic that have lots of attacks between rebels and rebels as well as between rebels and the government’s forces,” diplomat chief Prak Sokhonn stated.
“No single week went by without dangers. In 2017, four of our peacekeepers deceased in the rebel’s ambush,” he added.

BREAKING: Three Cambodian Peacekeepers in Mali Tested Positive of Covid-19

Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 24 – At least three Cambodian peacekeepers in Mali were tested positive of Covid-19, spokesperson of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces Phal Samorn confirmed to Fresh News on Friday.
“Two of our male peacekeepers and one female are infected with Covid-19. They are sent to a hospital in Bamako under intensive care and treatment by the UN medical team,” Lieutenant General Phal Samorn said.
“80 others in Mali are being tested among the total 300 Cambodian peacekeepers there,” he continued.
Samorn told Fresh News that The Royal Government of Cambodia in April has sent facemasks, sanitizers, and 80 sets of protective suits against Covid-19 to peacekeepers in Mali, where 309 cases of Covid-19 confirmed as of 24 April 2020.

Three Cambodian peacekeepers contract coronavirus in Mali
Three Cambodian peacekeepers who have been fulfilling their mission in Mali have been diagnosed with COVID-19, bringing the tally to six in the country.
Major General Kosal Malinda, spokeswoman for Cambodia’s National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces, said today that three Cambodian peacekeepers who worked for Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit stationed in Tombouctous town, Mali, tested positive for COVID-19 weeks ago.
“We have just received the report from the UN. They are all men,” Ms Malinda said. “Now they have got better and they no longer receive medical treatment but they remain under quarantine till May 25.”
“They are waiting for result of the second test to ensure they are free from COVID-19,” she said.

UN Speaks Highly of Cambodian Female Peacekeepers

The United Nations (UN) has lauded the sacrifice of female peacekeepers, including those from Cambodia, in the UN peacekeeping missions around the world.
The appreciation was made in a UN report quoted early this week by Gen. Sem Sovanny, Director General of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces, Mine and ERW Clearance (NPMEC).
Some 65 Cambodian female peacekeepers have been now on UN peacekeeping missions in different regions, he pointed out.
Cambodia was ranked 20th out of 120 countries that have sent female soldiers to the UN peacekeeping operations, he added.

Phnom Penh (FN), May 30 – One Cambodian peacekeeper in Mali has passed away on Friday due to Covid-19, Cambodian Defense Spokesperson Chum Socheat told Fresh News on Saturday.
Major General Sar Savy was one among the three Cambodian peacekeepers tested positive on 24 April 2020; the trio were sent to a hospital in Bamako under intensive care and treatment by the UN medical team. Two other peacekeepers recovered on 4 May 2020.

Lt-Gen Phal Samorn, spokesman for the National Center for Peacekeeping, Mine and UXO Clearance, said that the Cambodian Blue Helmet, who died from the disease Covid-19, has been named as Savy Savi, 63. He was born in Kok commune, Angsnuol district, Kandal province. He participated in United Nations missions in 2016 and 2019, and this was his third overseas mission.
His Excellency, Lieutenant General Phal Samorn, added that so far there have been six Cambodian Blue Helmets infected with Covid-19.
