“If the convicted do not agree with the ruling and wish to appeal to the Supreme Court, [they] can do so within one month of the announcement of this verdict,” Judge Sophal told the court.
The whole thing smells like bullshit, and there's your proof right there.

The key consideration here is whether she was being held against her will. Not a lot of details here but it does appear she made it to the Cambodian Embassy, ergo, she was not being held against her will.
 Actually, if I remember this case, the woman managed to send a help message to the Cambodian Embassy on someone else's phone.
Cambodian women are trafficked to Japan. Some of them know that it involves sex work, and others don't, but don't see why that means it's ok that they are treated like slaves.

Anybody can send a message to the Cambodian Embassy. What was the manner of her confinement? Was she chained to the furniture? Was she locked in a cage? This is the critical detail.

If you have a link that supports your recollection then fine, show it to me. Otherwise, I'm going on this story alone.

Can we agree that if a woman wants to go to Japan and be paid to have sex, that this is ok? And can't you see how something like that gets conflated with human trafficking not because it actually is but because it services an anti-prostitution agenda?

Your facepalm is adorable.

When seven of the women arrived Japan’s Gunma prefecture, they had their passports confiscated by a local restaurant owner and were forced into sex work there, the article says.
So no being chained to the furniture, no cages. For the record, if you take somebody's passport it's called theft, that's a crime, and is immediately reportable to the police.

Paying for transportation, visas, and passports, is a common benefit overseas employers grant employees. Had the only difference been that she was working as a waitress as opposed to a hostess there'd be no charge.

This is a travesty.
