U.S. declines to comment on dismissals of 32 embassy employees in Cambodia over alleged pornography sharing
15 April 2018
PHNOM PENH, April 14 (Xinhua) — The U.S. State Department on Saturday declined to comment on the dismissals of 32 U.S. embassy employees in Cambodia over alleged sharing of pornographic material in a non-official chat group.

"We do not comment on internal personnel matters," the U.S. State Department official wrote in an email to Xinhua.

Asked whether the termination of those employees was made in compliance with the Cambodia's Labor Law, the official said, "We note only that the Embassy has clear and firm policies regarding appropriate employee conduct as well as an appeal process for employees who believe they were unfairly terminated."

Media reported on Friday, quoting unnamed sources at the embassy as saying that the U.S. embassy in Cambodia had fired 32 people after they were allegedly caught sharing pornographic material.

Four anonymous sources said pornographic videos and photographs, including some featuring people under the age of 18, were shared in a Facebook Messenger chat group, according to media reports.

The fired embassy workers included Cambodians and Cambodian-Americans, and many were guards and some were clerical staff.

"including some featuring people under 18 years old" is an interesting euphemism for child porn.

I'm sure they would have posted copies of their birth certificates just to prove that they were under 18.

The US is a nation of prudes. We're OK with mega violence and drugs, but sex can't even be mentioned.

A US man slams US Embassy hypocrisy over the porn-sharing scandal. He has a point. The USA is constantly giving lessons to the rest of the world on how to behave with morality and transparency, so a cover-up of immoral behavior by US Embassy staff in Cambodia is hypocritical.
The incident is also being used in the point-scoring contest between the two countries, and it is not surprising that the supporters of HE's Cambodia are rubbing their hands with glee at the embarrassment this is causing the Americans.

American citizen lambasts US Embassy in Phnom Penh and opposition
16 April 2018

An American citizen based in Long Beach, California today lashed out at the seemingly hypocritical move by the United States embassy in Phnom Penh over its silence on the termination of 32 staffers for involvement in pornography.

Gary Fultheim, who owns the UCC Plaza in Long Beach and a long time Cambodia fan and advocate for non interference in Cambodia’s political affairs said that the current US Ambassador is a democrat appointed diplomatic servant complete with a list of democrat friendly staff.

“It is tragic that the United States government is continuously taking pot shots at Cambodia on issues of democracy, human rights, child trafficking etc, but here, the embassy personnel, some 32 of them were terminated immediately over alleged sharing of pornographic material in a non-official chat group.

"US embassy guard complains of forced overtime shifts

A security guard with the US embassy in Phnom Penh claimed yesterday that guards are being forced to work overtime in the wake of 32 people being fired after accusations that they were sharing pornographic material in a non-official chat group.

Four sources said last week that pornographic videos and photographs, including some featuring people under the age of 18, were shared in a Facebook Messenger chat group.
