OK, Jamie, I ran it past her and she knowsq it but considers it a bit too erudite for viilage speak. And no, I have no idea what would be erudite in a village of around 2,000 or so illiterate and semiliterate denizens. Interesting word, definitely not Khmer in origin, but yes used. I suspect it was introduced by the Cham. Its originally from Borneo and Indonesia where it's called ta pe. It is also a food with a high alcohol content..
