Mr Richy I do believe you are correct however I would put the figure at $20,000 just to be comfortable and make sure your on the right side of the road going forward.

Seriously what skills do you need to work in a developing country. Yes many have questioned, asked and pondered upon. How much monies do I need to last for a satisfactory time. How do I want to live my life in the new country of my dreams.
Questions for a few and little answers. Ideas and dreams do not always mix well away from the stability of western lands.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

about the only work is teaching English.
you probably need a tefl certification, and locals are very racist, so being white helps.
Disagree fully, their are jobs for qualified foreigners who actually have real degrees and are skilled in certain sectors, for the average joe :stir: ,English is always the only option,if your a skilled proffessional in let’s say ,banking, mining, architecture, hotel management etc their are options ,I find it funny that you can only Percieve the world as you know it.
Does the OP come across as a skilled professional to you? Or as someone chasing the 'living the life' dream and being 10-20 years late?

OP, Cambodia is not what it used to be. While salaries are still low, prices go up everywhere. Making enough money will be a serious problem, unless you have a great plan or bring your own funds / income from abroad or you have serious skills and experience in certain fields. Being able to speak American / English doesn't count.

'Living the dream' is what we you want it to be, but if it's trying to enjoy the sun, women and wine in 2018 Cambodia with zero familiarity with the region*, zero money**, and zero skills***, then you're going to have a bad time.

* I'm assuming, but OP hasn't said anything to show otherwise
** as stated by op
*** relevant, locally employable

I do agree with you and firmly believe that if your a loser in your country of origin then your going to be an even bigger loser here and probably end up teaching English and marrying a bar girl here whom you can’t even afford to take care of or better yet even pay for the wedding, you will grow to hate all the lovely people whom drive luxury cars and are minding their business enjoying their life whilst your stuck on your tuk tuk or scooter hoping for a hand out from an expat or khmer who gives you a chance.if you are old and broke your a fool and if you are young and broke you are on your way to being a broke fool, this is not the country to try and achieve the dream,no work permit get out,no money get out,no goals and determination to succeed and achieve the life you desire ,go smoke meth and for one moment you will be king in your own head or go to a bar filled with wash outs like yourself and enjoy the misery as we all know, misery loves company :)
