Dengue fever infection high but ‘controllable’, with peak season still to come

The number of dengue fever cases recorded so far this year in Cambodia continues to outpace the number of infections seen in the same period last year, with the peak season for the mosquito-borne virus still to come.

In the first nine weeks of 2018, the Kingdom already had tallied more than 800 cases of the disease, more than double the nearly 350 cases that were counted in the same period last year, said Dr Leang Rithea, director of the National Dengue Control Program.

Officials are heartened, however, to see the infection rate is starting to turn a corner.

The initial six weeks of the year saw roughly 100 new infections per week, while the rate over the past three weeks slowed to 80 to 90 – a significant enough drop for Rithea to deem the dengue situation “controllable”.

Government data models indicate Cambodia could see anywhere from 10,000 to 17,000 cases in 2018 – officials say 14,500 cases is the average number of dengue fever cases expected in a given year.
Dengue fever cases typically spike on a 5-6 year seasonal cycle and the last time the country experienced a severe year was in 2012, when nearly 40,000 people were infected with the disease and as many as 160 people died. Given the timing, officials expected Cambodia to have another high caseload either in 2017 or 2018.

I've heard of more people getting dengue than malaria in Cambodia. That doesn't mean it's a fact, so thought I'd ask here.
For Cambodian expats or longterm stayers, have you had experience with other foreigners who caught malaria here ? What about Cambodian family ? I know quite a few foreigners and locals who have had dengue, but only Cambodians who were diagnosed with malaria.
If it's true that you are more likely to catch dengue than malaria, it could be important regarding prevention since (if I understand right) dengue mosquitoes bite during the day so precautions like mosquito nets won't help.
Interesting question also about whether it's worth take anti-malaria medication if you are more likely to catch dengue than malaria. AFAIK, there's not much you can do to prevent dengue, apart from staying away from mosquito infested areas.

Yep and add to that in rural Cambodia there is standing water everywhere, toddlers running around unclothed and school rooms that are never fumigated.

Cases of dengue double in first half

The number of dengue cases during the first half of this year more than doubled compared to the same period last year and is increasing, a government report said on Wednesday.

The National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control (CNM) at the Ministry of Health released a document saying there were 3,284 cases of dengue fever from January to June, seven of which were fatal.

Last year there were only 1,580 cases and one death over the same period.

garbage = lots of small standing water = lots of mozzies = higher chance of aedes mozzies
