Dengue fever cases increase in first six months
September 11, 2018
The dengue fever cases for the first six months this year increased to more than 70 percent compared to the same period last year, a report said. The report by the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control said that there were 5,284 dengue fever cases in the first six months this year.

“The cases of dengue fever this year are about 77 percent or 3,704 cases in which there were 1,590 cases for the first six months in 2017,” director of the CNM Huy Rekol said.

“Ten people died of the dengue fever in 2018 which is higher than that in 2017 when one person died,” Mr Rekol said.

More than 71 percent of the patients were children aged between 5 and 14.

The dengue outbreaks continue unabated. At least 13 people have died this year. The majority of the victims are children.

Dengue outbreak sees 1,691 kids hospitalised in a month
4 December 2018
A total of 1,691 children were hospitalised at Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospital between October 21 and November 21 after an outbreak of haemorrhagic dengue fever.

Another 1,626 children were hospitalised at other Kantha Bopha hospitals during the same period, according to a report from the hospital obtained by The Post on Wednesday.

The report said the period saw the hospitalisation of 626 more children due to the disease than between September 21 and October 21. Of those, 140 children suffered from severe acute encephalitis, which is occasionally caused by haemorrhagic dengue fever.

The report said a total of 75,645 children were treated as outpatients at the hospital. Of the number, 14,650 were hospitalised and 2,285 had to undergo surgery – 53 had heart operations and interventional catheterisations.

In the maternity ward of Jayavarman VII Hospital (Kantha Bopha III in Siem Reap province) 13,868 women were examined and treated as outpatients while 2,365 deliveries took place during the same period.

The Ministry of Health’s Department of Planning and Health Information director Lo Veasnakiry and the ministry’s Communicable Disease Control Department director Ly Sovann could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

According to a ministry report issued on August 28, the first 26 weeks of this year saw 5,284 cases of haemorrhagic dengue fever – up 3,704 (77 per cent) compared to the same period last year.

The report said 13 people, mostly children, died from the disease during the first seven months this year, allegedly because the parents or guardians were too late in seeking medical treatment.

Dengue cases are on the increase, with recent reports of dengue fever also infecting tourists and visitors to Cambodia.

Taiwan sees spike in imported dengue fever cases from Cambodia: CDC
2018/12/21 16:19:05
Taipei, Dec. 21 (CNA) The number of imported dengue fever cases in Taiwan that originated in Cambodia has increased sharply this year to 66 compared with eight in 2017, a senior official at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Friday.

Cambodia has also been the largest source of imported dengue fever cases in Taiwan this year, said CDC Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥).

Citing CDC data valid as of Dec. 20, Chuang said the total number of imported dengue fever cases in Taiwan this year was 330, with the three major sources being Cambodia (66), Vietnam (62) and the Philippines (56).

Last year the number of cases that originated in Vietnam was 104 and in the Philippines 39, Chuang said.

He said the big jump in infections originating in Cambodia was due to an increase in Taiwanese visitors this year to the Southeast Asian country, where dengue fever has been spreading.

According to international media reports, 15,000 cases of dengue fever have been reported in Cambodia this year, 1.5 times the number in 2017, and 16 of those cases have been fatal.

The dengue fever outbreaks have occurred mostly in Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh and in Siem Reap, a resort town in northwestern Cambodia where the famous Angkor Wat religious monument is located, according to the reports.

I just got over Dengue a couple weeks ago, I asked the clinic where I was diagnosed whether they compiled statistics and forwarded them to anyone. The answer was no. My feeling then is that between lack of reporting and some people "toughing it out" that the actual numbers are higher.

So easily contolled if breeding places can be eliminated.

Not so here with scantily covered sewers.

A couple of foreigners in the office have gone down with it in the past few months, which is a lot considering there are only about 20 staff there.

I had it a few years ago when we were living in PP.

Got to be the ultimate weight loss program out there...

Unfortunately, I've seen, and then killed Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in many hotels in Phnom Penh, so they are quite often in your room when you arrive.

I've heard that if you get it a third time it can be fatal. Does anybody know if there is any truth in this?
