Uninsured Brit on a moto hit by car faces massive medical bills
Uninsured Brit In Critical Condition Following Hua Hin Motorbike Accident
Published on 18th March 2018 by Stickboy BKK
A British tourist is in a serious condition following a motorbike accident in Hua Hin with his family desperately trying to raise funds online to get him essential medial treatment.
Mark Haley, 55, from Borehamwood, was hit from behind by a car as he was riding a motorbike on Friday in the popular resort town.
According to the GoFundMe page he suffered a fractured spine, fractured pelvis, broken ribs, and a collapsed right lung. He is currently in ICU in an induced coma on a ventilator.
Due to the Brit not taking out insurance for the trip his family are now trying to raise 2 million baht (£50,000) to cover costs including a 200,000 baht (£4,500) helicopter transfer to a hospital in Bangkok claiming the poor condition of roads in Thailand and the severity of his injuries means he cannot make the journey by ambulance.
An update on Saturday stated Mr Haley remains in stable, but critical condition with medical bills stacking up with an overnight stay in hospital coming to 400,000 baht (£9,000).
- Does the car owner who provoked the accident have no responsibility here ? If you hit someone from behind you are usually liable.

good hospitals in Hua Hin and in the time he took to set up a gofund me page a ambulance would have delivered him to Bangkok
Yes the driver of the car will be responsible an Thailand requires all cars carry insurance ( could only be 3rd class but still ....)

Update 1
Posted by Lesley Fifield
Saturday 20 March: Mark remains in stable, but critical condition. He is in ICU in an induced coma on a ventilator, as he was in a lot of pain and very restless when he woke up after the accident.
It is so hard for us as a family being so far away and not being at his side to tell him we love him and to reassure him we are there and that we are doing everything we can for him. We are very lucky to have some amazing friends in Thailand who are doing all they can to help and support him in our absence.
The overnight stay in hospital has racked up costs of over 400,000 Thai Bhat (9,000 pounds). Scans have shown a small bleed on the brain from the trauma, which they have reassured us doesn't require an operation and a number of fractured ribs, which have punctured his lungs.
We have been overwhelmed by the messages of support and everyone's generosity. Thank you so much.
Gofundme. MarkHaley

If you can't take the pain, don't play the game..... fund yourself.

A father-of-six is in an induced coma after he was hit by a car while in Thailand. Mark Haley, 55, from Borehamwood, was travelling on a moped yesterday in Hua Hin, Phetchaburi, when he was struck from behind by a car.
He has been in Thailand on holiday for three weeks visiting friends but took out no travel insurance for the trip. The hospital he is currently at does not provide the treatment that he needs. http://www.borehamwoodtimes.co.uk/news/ ... h/?ref=rss
Why? I can understand a young penniless backpacker who is traveling for an extended period risking being uninsured, it goes with the stupidity of youth. But for a mature father of six who is on a short holiday risking it, and putting all his family at financial risk for just a few pounds!
Make a memorable trip to Thailand with a great value travel insurance policy starting from just £23.50* to cover your worldwide travel
Choosing your insurance provider
Getting cover for your trip to Thailand need not be expensive or stressful. The three levels of Holiday Extras protection allow you to pick up just the right amount of cover:
Basic cover provides £500 of cancellation cover per person, £1 million for medical costs, and £1,500 for baggage.
Standard cover includes cancellation costs of £1,000 per person, medical cover of £2 million and baggage cover at £1,500.
Premium cover increases your medical protection to £5 million, cancellation cover to £5,000 per person, and offers £1,500 of baggage cover.https://www.holidayextras.co.uk/travel- ... iland.html

I just don't understand. Had an acquaintance who would spend lots of money on booze every night but considered buying insurance a waste of money. He hit a coconut whilst riding a back in Vietnam and ended up a quadriplegic and his parents had to sell the house to cover his medical bills....

If you are a tourist, there is often a travel medical insurance included when you pay for your plane ticket with a credit card, that includes emergency accident treatment and will fly you home if necessary.
Depends on your type of card, but most Visa and Mastercards issued in Europe have this insurance automatically included when you buy air tickets. Good for 90 days travel I think.(Except maybe for travel to the US, because healthcare is so expensive.)
This is no good for expats, but how many gofundme tourists from the UK are insured through the credit card payment of their plane ticket for serious accidents, but are unaware of this ?

Moto involved so a lot of insurance companies will not pay out.

True, but that's not the point. He could just as easily been hit as a pedestrian or in a car crash.
