ASEAN-Australian Summit starts today

ASEAN-Australian Summit starts today

Turnbull urges ASEAN countries to expand trade alliances in face of protectionism
16 March 2018
Malcolm Turnbull is urging Asian leaders to expand a regional trade alliance at a time of growing protectionism in the United States, singling out Indonesia and Thailand as two countries that could commit to a deal.

The Prime Minister told Fairfax Media he “absolutely” wanted to encourage more neighbours to sign up to the Trans Pacific Partnership as he hosts 10 regional leaders at a rare summit in Sydney this weekend.

But progress on regional security appears more difficult as leaders consider whether to use the special summit to send a sharper message to Beijing about the build-up of military bases in the South China Sea.

Aung San Suu Kyi comes to ASEAN summit with reputation tarnished
Two years ago, Aung San Suu Kyi led the National League for Democracy (NLD) into Government in Myanmar amid a global outpouring of support and goodwill.

When she arrives in Australia for this weekend's ASEAN-Australia Special Summit, the welcome will be cooler, tempered by her Government's limited progress on a range of political and economic issues.

In particular, concerns will be raised over the Myanmar military's appalling treatment of the Muslim Rohingya, and Ms Suu Kyi's refusal to denounce it.

Well it's good to see that they are not doing serious and insulting things like throwing their shoes at effigies.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Protesters take aim at Southeast Asia leaders in Sydney
ASEAN+ March 17, 2018 13:50
By Agence France-Presse
Thousands demonstrated in the city against a raft of grievances on the sidelines of an Australia-ASEAN special summit, where Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has vowed to tackle human rights issues.

They came together to urge the release of political prisoners in Vietnam, an end to strongman HE's regime in Cambodia and a halt to the military crackdown on Rohingya in Myanmar.

"We are here to protest issues that are happening in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, the Rohingya -- you name it, we are here to send a clear voice to these governments that you do not mistreat human rights," Vietnamese-Australian protestor Davy Nguyen told AFP.
