The Tourist Industry is Booming in Siem Reap
hile Phnom Penh clearly remains home to the Kingdom’s strongest central business district, the booming tourism industry continues to fuel business growth in Siem Reap.
According to preliminary results of the country’s intercensal economic census released yesterday by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the National Institute of Statistics (NIS), there were 37,000 registered business establishments in Siem Reap this year, up 34 per cent from 27,000 in 2011.
“The vast majority of new business establishments are simply from the service sector, which is continually trying to cater for the country’s tourism industry,” Ly Visal, office manager at the Federation of Associations for Small and Medium Enterprises of Cambodia, said.
The data released yesterday, which come after the first full economic census was conducted in 2011 and before the next in 2021, found the total number of non-streetside businesses operating around the country increased to more than 514,000 as of March this year, up from 463,000 in March 2011.
In Phnom Penh, the number of businesses increased 16 per cent during the past three years to more than 98,000.
But while the data indicate how tourism dollars are fuelling economic growth in Cambodia’s tourism capital, Ho Vandy, co-chair of the Private and Public Sector Tourism Working Group, says that
the increase in business activity is not being met with adequate infrastructure to service the demand.
“If that growth figure continues into the future at such a rapid rate, it will surely impact negatively on the environment and overburden the existing infrastructure of Siem Reap,” he said, calling for more attention to be paid to waste disposal, new and better roads and tourism transport facilities.
International tourist arrivals in Siem Reap surpassed 2.2 million last year, up 38 per cent from 1.6 million in 2011, according to Ministry of Tourism data. Meanwhile, the ministry reported there to be more than 390 hotel and guesthouse businesses, 178 restaurants, 49 massage parlours and 17 karaoke bars registered in the city.
“More bars and guest houses in the town centre are not necessarily the answer in Siem Reap. During the low season, there is very high competition for tourist business,” Vandy said. “There is understandably a concentration of these businesses in the town, but we wish to see more business activity in the outskirts and other areas of the province, which give tourists a reason to see more and spend their money more widely.”
While new businesses continue to flock to tourist hotspots and the nation’s capital, lesser known provinces such as Kep, Stung Treng, Pailin and Kampong Thom are seeing only marginal growth.
In the past three years, Kampong Thom saw the smallest increase in business establishments. Registered businesses there totalled 21,000, up just 1.8 per cent from 2011.

Re: The Tourist Industry is Booming in Siem Reap
If an airline can ever break the strangle hold that Vietnam Air (aka Cambodia Angkor Air) has on the Sihanoukville airport, Snooky will be a major tourist destination. AirAsia walked away after the powers that be jacked the "fees' up and Cambodia Airlines (49% Philippine Air) can't get the paperwork signed.
Maybe the one Billion dollar Interstate Resorts and Hotels deal (American company owned by the government of China) will be the breaker. This is if the Cambodian powers that be don't screw up the deal with jacked up "fees." (Chevron walked away from its Cambodia oil drilling because of corruption.)
Sihanoukville, the only city in Southeast Asia that you can walk out the back door of a casino into a natural beach. Phnom Penh is a tourist dead end. Water, beach's, casinos, islands will always win over garbage, traffic, pollution, mass population with no municipal transportation system, failing infrastructure, etc (Phnom Penh)

Are you not tired of quoting the 1 billion dollars investment on snake island exemple ? It must be at least the 10th time in various threads and forums. How many failed massive investments have we seen announced over the years ? I searched and found little information about this deal on internet, I haven't seen anything happening for sure, yet I own a bird view place overlooking the bridge and island. I am not even sure the existing bridge is up to standards but I am no specialist.Sailorman wrote:

Meanwhile the biggest touristic project in SHV is closing to completion : koh krabei in front of Ream bay. 30 to 50 luxury villas with dedicated access pier. IMO let see how that goes, along with similar medium scale projects before wishing game changing, out of proportion realizations.

Re: The Tourist Industry is Booming in Siem Reap
Siem Reap has excellent regional airlinks.
if you travel a lot, it is worth considering as a home base for this reason alone.
The rents up there are getting visibly higher by the month.

Siem Reap has an infrastructure ?????Ho Vandy wrote:"If that growth figure continues into the future at such a rapid rate, it will surely impact negatively and overburden the existing infrastructure of Siem Reap,” he said,

Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht
In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

No Information on the Ko Pous Island project and Interstate Hotels and Resorts on the internet? You must not know how to Google very good as I can find all sorts of sites with information on the project.
BTW, Barange_Doa_Slae. Unless you live less than one , two, or three thousand meters from the Ko Pous bridge, I live closer to it than you as I can walk there in about three/four minutes.
As to talking about the project, unless the powers that be screw it up its the biggest project ever in Snooky that's not a money laundering scam. Interstate Hotels and Resorts has over 300 hotels world wide, and its parent companies and Chinese government have money to burn. (unlike the Russian that started the project.) The next few months are going to be very interesting. Can the powers that be screw this one up? Yes, its possible as AirAsia was going to fly to Snooky, but were blocked and walked away.
The project down near Riem, is that the one also backed by the government of China and they illegally took parts of the park and blocked off others to the public? The Cambodian courts said it was illegal, but big gifts were given to HE's bodyguard detail to continue the project. Oh! how the money rolls in.

only redeeming reason to go there is to leave an head to o the islands

knew richard would chime in, with his antiquity knowledge on the place. lol.
seriously, since you like talking so much shit on sihanoukville, try stopping in sometime for a refresher on the place. go out and see all of the new developments, try out one of the nicer hotels, etc. then comment on it. otherwise i'm just going to keep telling you what phuket is like without ever going as well.
also, Chevron walked away (well, sold rights for a nice profit) because of Cambodia dragging ass on getting their own site survey done so the contracts could be signed... because they couldn't afford to have one done. (Granted, in a roundabout way the reason they couldn't afford it was because corruption had leeched all of the money...)

Re: The Tourist Industry is Booming in Siem Reap
Certainly makes it a more viable alternative for me being able to access Siem Riep directly from Bangkok with Air Asia. I'm giving it a go next month for an extended period and am looking forward to exploring the place in more detail and seeing if I can settle into a pace of life that suits me and occupies me. I'm finding the Siem Riep Expats Facebook page useful as one source of info on what's happening, entertainment, food, housing etc for anyone else considering the place.frank lee bent wrote:Siem Reap has excellent regional airlinks.

Sihanoukville, which I used to like in 1996-97 will never replace SR as a tourist capitol. It's not that one is better than the other; it's just that casinos cannot compete with Angkor Wat, if by chance they do; they will simply build casinos in SR.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.
