Man and his Car beaten badly #PublicJustice

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Phnom Penh: On 3 November 2018, Judge Leang Chey of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court announced the sentences of the men accused of beating Dr Suy Sareth in March 2018, in a case of mob justice. Jail terms of three years to 18 months were delivered to the three men, as well as financial compensation of 500 million riel (or $ 125,000) to the victim.
The accused were charged with intentional violence with aggravating circumstances and intentionally causing damage with aggravating circumstances under Articles 218 and 411 of the Penal Code.

The three accused admitted that they smashed the car and attacked Suy Sareth, a university professor, causing him serious injuries. However, they pleaded mitigating circumstances, saying they believed that the victim was of Chinese nationality.

I shouldn't laugh at racism however this seems almost comical as an excuse

What else could they really say? That they screwed up and beat up a politically someone that shouldn’t have been touched.

Those Daun Penh security guards have been state sanctioned bullies for years. They must have thought that they were untouchable.

Seemed to be to be a calculated Khmer risk. Kinda like professing addiction or insanity defense in the West.

Admitting they screwed up and messed up someone they shouldn’t have touched would have them lose face big time. But he isn’t part of iron man’s family relations so there probably isn’t a verdict that the judge must carry out. Plus the locals aren’t particularly thrilled with the PRC Chinese, especially seeing the transformation of Sihanoukville. They accept because the leaders tell them to. Maybe they are betting that the judge is ordinary enough to be sympathetic.

Or they could just claim they were possessed by tree spirits.

Would be interested to hear the eventual verdict.

What about the two folk he hit before they caught up with him. Reading through the posts one was seriously injured. What compensation did they get for injuries and their damaged vehicles?
