Land of Smiles

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

I think that's nonsense, the pandemic hasn't changed anything. You could always find examples like this one to make your case for "xenophobia in Thai society", if that's your thing. Those Thais who are xenophobic didn't need a pandemic to bring out their true colors - they were unashamedly xenophobic long before!

Then again, why single out Thais? I don't know of any foreigner here in Thailand who was refused treatment by a hospital for being a foreigner (as reported from Cambodia) or refused a haircut for being a foreigner (as reported from Vietnam). If anything, Thais I'm dealing with in Bangkok seem more eager for my business nowadays.
So you think it's just chance that the newsreader recently referred to hitting the Indian before the cobra in the context of the arrival of the Delta (aka Indian) variant of Covid? And this isn't some anonymous person expressing their own thoughts, this is someone broadcasting it to the general population. The guy should be sacked.

Or the thai minister at the airport complaining about 'dirty' foreigners for not wearing masks?

Or the Bangkok restaurant refusing to serve farangs?

Of course once xenophobic always xenophobic but seems to me the pandemic and the associated misfortune it has brought to Thailand has triggered such vocal feelings more so than they would otherwise.. A latent phobia if you like given the catalyst to come out..
Would you say xenophobia only exists on the Thai side of the border? Or are we being kind to the situation over here by perhaps calling it something different and having pitty on the people because of their suffered hardship in past years.
No of course not, there is that in Cambodia too just as there is in many countries. It's a question of degree and imho it's more endemic in society in Thailand.

From my experience of living in both countries, I've come across more xenophobia in Thailand than Cambodia.

I know some members have called it a cliché but Thailand does have a long standing reputation of xenophobia whereas I don't think that is the case In Cambodia (excluding perhaps KR times).

I also think xenophobia is at all levels of society in Thailand..from top to bottom. The above examples of a Thai minister and TV newsreader are examples of that. I don't get a sense of the same degree here in Cambodia and certainly HE's policy to barangs for covid vaccine and treatment are examples that suggest otherwise.

So this is my opinion based on my experiences and what I've heard and seen. Yong's original post highlighted another example of it that was allowed to be broadcast on national TV. Others obviously may have different views and disagree or think there's no difference with Cambodia...that's fine.
Sorry yong too disrupt your food thread, but you had quoted first I belive.
The Thai minister had been mentioned - I remember the Cambodian PM broadcasting at the time of the westerners vacation on the boat at Kampong Cham, discovered to have covid19. He broadcast and had given out a phone number too hotel owners, not having too accommodate barang, and if the hotels had problems with such people they could call the number, then the authorities would sort it. I was on a road trip at the time, it made it very difficult for us to get accommodation and food, that made the dissision to return home.
But I agree has the pandemic has moved on the country has been helpful in ways.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

Had booked my Moderna vaccine months ago which is supposed to arrive in October. Looking at the current situation (1) Delta variant spreading, (2) the government's interference in private hospital buying of vaccines, (3) lies and more lies from government's promises my conclusion is its too risky to wait for the promised Moderna if it will ever come in October at all. So last week decided to go for Sinopharm as an interim measure while waiting for Moderna.

Today went to have my first shot of Sinopharm

Arriving at the hospital it was quiet and not many people

No chaos, everything in order
