Do Cambodians give kisses on the cheek?

Post by superferret »

I don't quite understand how Cambodians decide when to kiss someone on the cheeks.
I haven't seen it much, but occasionally I've seen it. It's not like in Europe where kissing people, even strangers sometimes is quite common.
Is it something limited to adults and their kids, or what's the "policy"? When they do kiss is it just one cheek American style or both cheeks European style?

Khmers don't do European or American style. Khmers don't kiss.

If you've seen old documentaries with the former king kissing a foreign diplomat, it would be diplomatic language of the French style.

If you've seen bar girls doing it, it's because they've been with lots of barang.

So you're saying kissing is not used as a form of greeting at all? They definitely kiss babies on the cheeks. But like within a family they don't kiss each other? Ever? So for example if a family member was away for a long time and went back to his family, would they just hug him/her ?

in most parts of Asia public displays of affection such as kissing (whether as a greeting or with a loved one) arent common at all and socially awkward
the only cheek kiss you would come into contact with is the Asian "sniff kiss" which is used as sign of endearment

Kissing is foreign.

They don't kiss babies. They rub their nose in the babies face while sniffing. *sniff* *sniff*. Not a kiss.

Reuniting with family will be hugs. Not kisses. Unless they are westernized i.e. returnees bringing back unhygienic habits from foreign countries.

I'd be willing to bet that my in-laws have never kissed in their entire life. *sniff* *sniff*

I see, how about french kissing between girlfriend and boyfriend? Is that something they also don't do ? If so what's first base for them? Sniffing the girl :)?
Btw, they do have an original khmer word for kissing, which means they definitely did have it somewhere in their culture.
If they didn't the word would not exist or it would be a french word.

they dont have an original word for "Kiss" in the western sense mate,

the Khmer word for "Kiss" is ថើប - Therb,
which is the word for a "Sniff Kiss"
it is also used for "Sniff" (as in sniffing a flower)
in the Dictionary the word ថើប is described as - "by touching someone's cheek with one's nose and sniffing; now used in the western sense"

ខ្សឺត - Ksert is another word used for the "sniff kiss"
or as the dictionary says - sniff; to kiss (in the Cambodian manner by placing the nose against the cheek and sniffing).

both words used a lot in this song "Therb oun mouy Ksert"

Great explanation thanks, funny I never heard about this sniffing thing before.

They never kiss like that here, as it is a tropical climate and would just encourage the spread of pathogens.
Khmers are like Eskimos, but even a brief touch between noses can be loaded with emotion and become a wonderful thing.
The arrival of European scoundrels in the 16th century brought foreign habits such as hugs, tenderness and blowjobs back into fashion.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
