Sihanoukville

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

No its not worth visiting Sihanoukville anymore.
1. Ochheuteal beach - Most of the expats bars have been knocked down and no one is looking after the beach. It is covered in rubbish etc.
2. Independence Beach - There are a handful of beach bars left but there are huge Chinese sky-scrappers being built next door.
3. Otres and Otres 2 - There are some nice bars left but there is lots of building work everywhere.
4. Victory Hill - There are only about 5 western bars left. Everything else is Chinese owned amd not very welcoming to westerners.

On top of that:
1. The road to Otres etc. is a building site & the dust is horrendous
Still a fair section of Occheateal serviable and clean if you go by the knocked down bit and keep going till you see "in my dreams" the cater for those in need of a bar aimed at foreigners. We get on fine in a bar aimed at Cambodians.

Getting a hotel at a reasonable price will be an issue a friend, who is a regular visitor over many years, for a month has had to move 4 times because of prebooked rooms - book you whole stay online if you want to avoid it. gone are they days when you could just arrive and look around to see what suited you.
there are still parts of the beach that are fine once you get past the building site where all the bars used to be. I never go Otres so can not comment.

Businesses in Sihanoukville told to clean up
27 February 2018
SIHANOUKVILLE - Preah Sihanouk provincial authorities and relevant departments have asked businesses and tour operators in Sihanoukville to enhance the city’s beauty and prevent sewage from flowing into the sea, while warning of administrative measures for those failing to comply.

A notice concerning order at Ochheuteal Beach was issued on Sunday by the provincial governor and directors of the departments of environment, public works and transport, tourism, and land management, urban planning and construction.

It asked owners of businesses and tour agencies to stop putting chairs, tables and other objects on the beach. It also requested that animals not be fed in coastal areas, that sewage not be flowed into the sea and that motorcycles not be repaired on the beach.

The notice gave owners until Wednesday to heed its contents or administrative action would be taken against them.

Kong Sorphea, acting governor of Sihanoukville, warned business owners to comply with the notice.

“In case business owners fail to comply with the contents of the notice, we will take action to remove and confiscate tables, chairs and other materials to be kept at City Hall without any liability for the damage or loss of property,” he said.

Ly Vanda, deputy governor of Sihanoukville, yesterday went to inspect the environment along Ariston Beach in Lek Boun commune.

He said provincial authorities had previously informed stall owners along the beach to take down their stalls to make it beautiful along the coast again. A working team removed the remaining 12 stalls with good cooperation from the owners, he added.

“We have advised vendors at the beach not to build stalls or place tables and chairs along the coast any more, which leads to a loss of beauty,” he said. “And we told provincial authorities to improve sanitation along the coast for national and international tourists visiting Preah Sihanouk province.”

sihanoukville was never great, but it had a charm about it, which has now been destroyed by all the construction and concrete buildings going up everywhere and the plague of chinese cockroaches

look, it was always a 3rd tier destination.
kuta went through the same thing- though without the liabilities of a port in terms of tourism development.
at least this is a good chance to remedy the awful sewage, electric , water and rubbish problems.

the prices being paid for realestate don't really admit of the possibility of typhoid or cholera epidemics.
not good for operators.
so i expect the reset may have some benefits.

Is it worth visiting?
I would say no, too. It's always been a shithole but it's gone from a somewhat interesting shithole to a not-at-all
interesting shithole. If the accommodation was cheap, maybe. But for 20 dollars a night for an aircon room? No way.

Hi Frank, when you consider Snooky "a 3td tier destination" are you comparing it to other beach resorts in Asia or other places in Cambodia ?

As for the other possible benefits time will tell, but I'm not particularly impressed with Chinese standards of hygiene, especially since most will be visiting and not working there.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

yeah SHV used to be cheap, but for a room that you would pay $12-15 for in Phnom Penh youre now paying $20 for in Sihanoukville
