Yet another holiday? Cambodia leads the world in public holidays
Can Cambodia stay competitive with so many public holidays?
22 February 2018
Cambodia likely became the country with the largest number of public holidays in the world on Tuesday, raising questions about the ability of Cambodia to stay economically competitive with so many mandatory leave days.
Cambodia will observe the “Day of Remembrance” on May 20, a politically fraught date that was originally established by the Vietnamese-backed government in 1984 as a “Day of Hatred against the genocidal Pol Pot-Ieng Sary-Khieu Samphan clique and the Sihanouk-Son Sann reactionary groups”.
But politics aside, the announcement – which brings Cambodia’s number of public holidays to 28 – could hurt the country’s ability to attract future investment, according to Stephen Higgins, managing partner at Mekong Strategic Partners.
“Without questioning the appropriateness of a holiday to respect the victims of the Khmer Rouge, there is absolutely no question that 28 days holiday is too many,” Higgins said. “I don’t think you would find a single business person in Cambodia who thinks the number of holidays is good for the country.”

Cambodia, First Worldwide in Public Holidays
Monday, 11 June, 2018 - 05:00
When it comes to holidays, Cambodians can feel sorry for other countries. While some consider themselves lucky because they have more than 10 official holidays a year, Cambodia has 28 days, almost a month.
The South-Eastern Asian Kingdom tops the world’s list in the number of public holidays, followed by Sri Lanka with 25, while India and Kazakhstan have 21 days.
According to the German News Agency, the public holidays in Cambodia highlight the country’s complicated history, as well as the unusual confusion between socialism, Buddhism and royalty.
All the country’s population – 97 percent of them - are Buddhist, which explains the reason behind the great number of religious holidays.
Although the family of King Norodom Sihamoni prefers to stay away from lights, they are widely respected and appreciated among the people: the King's birthday is a holiday, as well as his mother's birthday, the date of his father's death and the day of his crowning.
In addition, there are holidays to commemorate Cambodia's independence from France, the end of the Khmer Rouge regime, the signature of the Constitution, and the signature of Paris Peace Agreements in 1991.
Public holidays also include Labor Day, International Women's Day, Children's Day and Human Rights Day.

I honestly don't know what all the furore over Cambodian public holidays are. Above are the lists of Aussie states public holiday. Works out at an average of about 15 a year (lowest at 13, highest at 18). Then of course, we only work a 38 hour week (penalty rates apply after that), we receive 4 weeks annual paid leave (includes 17.5% loading whether or not you usually do overtime), 3 months fully paid long service leave every 10 years in most industries (portable long service paid weekly into your PLSL fund by your various employers in piece work industries), sick pay, compo if injured at work. Seriously, who has it better, the Cambodian or the Aussie workers?

Pfffffttttt - completely untrue. As a casual labourer in Australia you are paid casual loading on your wage to make up for the rights you don't have (paid leave and sick days) You ARE entitled to overtime rates, long service leave and workers compo. I spent 30 years in construction in Australia How long do you have up?Beerinthemorning wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 9:58 amPffffttttt completely untrue.Hotdigr wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 9:38 am https://www.australia.gov.au/about-aust ... c-holidays

I think most Cambodians work a 6-day work week. Most Western countries are 5-day a week (40 hour work week or less). If so, then Cambodians work 52 more days per year. Minus the 28 holidays and you still get an excess of 24 work days for Cambodians. That is almost 5 additional work weeks per year over Western countries.

Its a joke.
You pretty much need two jobs because public holidays , getting rained off and 9 day fortnights.
My mate on the pension earned only a 1000$ a month less than me labouring.
Plus hes got all the concessions and pays half the rent i pay....
In Australia dole bludgers,immigrants, refugees
Come first .
Workers come last.
