Old travel blog slamming Thai people revived as hot topic amongst Thai’s

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Travel blog slamming Thai people hot topic amongst Thai’s
2 Feb, 2018
A blog post from 2014, called “7 Reasons Why We Won’t be Returning to Thailand,” has been recently updated and sparked a new round of comments and a discussion on Reddit’s Thailand forum over the last two days.

The scathing post called British blogger Jack Bolshaw’s three week trip to Thailand “horrendously stressful and generally unpleasant.”

“A holiday we were immensely looking forward to was spoilt by, I regret to say so bluntly, the majority of the Thai people we came across,” who he called “openly passive-aggressive and deceitful.”

Aside from making sweeping generalizations — which his recent update clarified are only about those working in the travel industry — he called out getting overcharged, people hooking up on the beach, massage girls eagerly offering special services, Thai people that couldn’t give directions, and a bus that arrived at its destination 55 minutes longer than expected.

[Comments]
“If you run into assholes once in a while that’s normal. If you run into them everywhere you go, you’re probably an asshole.”

Bolshaw opened a discussion that had many people wondering why people that expect foreign countries to be just like their home country travel — much less publish their experiences as a travel writer.

The guy writes the truth, even if Thai people don't want to hear it.

Thailand is a socially engineered, feudalistic, caste society and shithole country where (your) money is king, but you are the shit.

In addition to the links below, there are countless other situations where people have been set up or for held ransom by the police or falsely accused of wrong-doing for money.

One example is the female Kiwi sports reporter who was killed by a Thai guy in Phuket when he rear-ended the couple's motorcycle. The police tried to blame the fiance of the reporter and held him in a cell, along with his passport, trying to extort 30,000bt out of him, or he would go to jail. Mind you, he was grieving at the time as he had just lost his fiance. If it weren't for the CCV cameras, he would have been fried! In the end, the police told him no charges for the Thai person who caused the accident but he gets his freedom back. Talk about a hard pill to swallow!

Here are some links. Do your own research.
FYI, I know Ian Rance and was only too happy to provide the NYT writer with info regarding the cop who escaped and the slave labor ships.

If you don't go to Thailand, this shit won't happen to you!

It's great that the Thais are reading this. I noticed many times that Thais purposely do not speak English. Even many Thais who work with foreigners refuse to learn the 20 words it would take, unlike Cambodians and all other nations. Learning 20 words of English is just basic respect if you happen to be in a job where you work with international clientèle. Many Thais purposely withdraw that respect, and I also noticed the rudeness on a regular basis that you don't find in other Asian countries.

I understand it stems from the fact they resent the types of foreigners who have used Thailand as their playground, but it was in fact the Thais selling themselves out like no other nation and catering to the mafia and lowlifes of the West that resulted in this.

After many trips there, I see the Thais as the most two faced nation.
For one thing they prostitute their daughters like no other nation in the world, at the same time they block pornography on the Internet.

They sell themselves out to foreigners, but at the same time they do not allow integration and opportunities for those foreigners who are seriously interested in their culture and language and would like to establish themselves and invest in Thailand. They make it extremely difficult with their visa policies, no property ownership, no business ownership, no path to citizenship. But of course you can buy all this if you pay enough (elite visa, etc.), and they don't care if you got that money by being Russian mafia or a hitman for the cartel. But for normal people looking to integrate and contribute to their society, tough luck, they don't want us.
Besides that I don't know if others noticed, but Thailand is becoming a surveillance police state in a really bad way.

The above does not apply to the vast majority of normal Thai people that have nothing to do with this entire story, so I don't judge any individual Thai without knowing them, a lot of Thais are great people who I respect and have nothing to do with this.

its changed now. Thais were told by the General to learn English or all the best jobs would go to Philippino and Cambodian. Last few trips I have found English speaking staff in all sorts of odd places they never were before. Funny thing is this Thai isolationism may well succeed in stopping the Chinese invading. hope so or they just wasted all their time learning English :stir:
The new King seems interested on western culture, so maybe things will change

you make some good points and some of the above is true, some not so much....
,noticed many times that Thais purposely do not speak English...
NOT true, Plenty of thai's , especially if their working the tourist market speak english ,yep go to nakorn nowhere, very few will
I understand it stems from the fact they resent the types of foreigners who have used Thailand as their playground, but it was in fact the Thais selling themselves out like no other nation and catering to the mafia and lowlifes of the West that resulted in this.
Partially true,Thailand was/is a very easy country to enter and very easy to do business in the 70-90's, so many lowlifes did end here. Pattaya was built up on tons of German illegal slot machine money....
Even now, if u have $$$ its easy to do or get just about anything..
they don't want us.
Never have, never will, been saying for years. Better put a sign at arrival "thanks for visiting Thailand and spending ur money and please come back but dont stay long..."
For one thing they prostitute their daughters like no other nation in the world, at the same time they block pornography on the Internet.
Yep but they cant stop their own citizens from anything, BUT they can control the internet.
They sell themselves out to foreigners
100% true, they are so proud they have never been colonized, BUT in fact all they did was allow anyone ( Burmese, Brits, Japanese ) to come in and the thai's gave them the keys to the country
You forgot the most draconian laws concerning lèse-majesté, (which Cambodia just also started enforcing).....
They make it extremely difficult with their visa policies, no property ownership, no business ownership, no path to citizenship;
Nope,if u qualify its very easy to stay short time ( 30 days =visa free for so many) or long term, ( you mention the elite visa... so why not allow those that have money a longer visa??), you can own a business with thai partners ( same as Cambodia, Laos, Burma) Or if ur American --100% ownership), Citizenship after 3 years if holding a type B visa and some tests and alot less $$$ than Cambodia,...i know a few Farangs that hold thai citizenship. The landownership are NO DIFFERENT than any other country in SE Asia.
Besides that I don't know if others noticed, but Thailand is becoming a surveillance police state in a really bad way
. No more so than the UK or any western country...Immigration does keep adding more paperwork for us to stay...and for sure wants to know where those staying here are.
The above does not apply to the vast majority of normal Thai people that have nothing to do with this entire story, so I don't judge any individual Thai without knowing them, a lot of Thais are great people who I respect and have nothing to do with this.
:thumb: :thumb: so why, because of a few bad people do so many, ( expats in Cambodia it seems), hate thailand. You see it that much different over there??....Cambodia seems to be implementing the same things that they do here.

some additional points..
Thai police have got to be at the top of the most corrupt police force ( along with the khmers) in the world.

2 very recent stories.
One lady in Issan last week won 6,000,000 baht on the lottery, the local police chef went to her and showed her some made up papers accusing her of all sorts of stuff, IF she didn't give him half. Guess what she did and then went to the newspaper .. creating a hell of a mess for him ( he was arrested) and the police force.

last week the Royal thai police came down from Bangkok to Phuket without informing the local police or the Navy, they raided all the jet ski owners, arrested 75 of them for being unregistered and fined them 1,000 baht each and told them to get legal, The head of the Navy here was Immediately transferred. Local police an navy were pissed they weren't informed of the raid (wonder why ?? LOL)
The jet ski/para sail owners have always thought of themselves above the law and someone is making $$$

Going rate to be transferred to phuket for a police officer is 100,000 baht. for a police chef it runs in the millions....

Thai's truly take advantage of unsuspecting tourists, ripping them off, overcharging and such, its in their nature, same as its in their nature to lie..

For many it may not be the best place in the world , ( everywhere has its troubles), but its still a dam good place to live...
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

I have to disagree with you on this. The elite visa is expensive for ordinary expats. It's not that I couldn't pay it, but having to pay like 250-300 dollars a month just to be there and avoid all the harassment and inconvenience with the visas is ridiculous. Contrast this to Cambodia or Vietnam which are happy to have me long term for a tenth of the amount or South American countries which let me stay for up to half year at no cost. I just don't feel like I should be giving a gift of 250-300 dollars a month to the Thais so they let me stay in their "wonderful" country. If you contrast to other countries, it's so not worth it.

I also find the concept of giving resident visas for money without any other criteria morally very low, and to my knowledge there's no other country on the planet that does this so blatantly. It really just shows the Thai mentality, that they don't really care what type of person you are, they don't care if you're going to learn their language or anything, all they want is your money. If you're a criminal who hates Thai culture but has the money to pay the elite visa, Thais welcome you. Not only do they welcome you, the gov't will give you an official paper that you're an "elite" foreigner now and they'll take you to and from the airport in limousines, which is included in the visa for some strange reason. Again what a total sell out.
If you're a decent English teacher and honestly interested in them and their culture and would contribute and educate their kids, you're priced out.

A lot of people who invest in Thailand 1-2 years could also have a difficult time deciding whether they should invest in this 16,000 dollar visa, instead of buying a new car or an apartment in many countries. That's why it also sucks, no flexibility. Imagine buying it, then changing your mind about Thailand after a year or two, what a rip off.
As for Thai partners, in Cambodia you might not be able to own property other than condos, but you can certainly run a business without local partners, which is a huge deal. There are numerous small business run by barangs here.

wow are you way off on this one and others.
Obtaining thai citizenship;
first their is a yearly quota, You have to have lived and worked here for 3 straight years, you need to offer a tangible contribution to Thai society, u need speak, read and write thai just about fluently, as you will be interviewed in Thai and take a short written test in thai, u need 3 upstanding thai references, you need sing the national anthem in Thai, you need have a complete police clearnence, Pay apx 190,000 baht
hardly things some mafia figure or off the street vagabond would be able or even willing to accomplish
The elite visa is expensive for ordinary expats.
true BUT
for people buying homes in the hundreds and even million's of $$ ....500,000 baht is chicken feed.
A lot of people who invest in Thailand 1-2 years could also have a difficult time deciding whether they should invest in this 16,000 dollar visa,
There are investment visas ( 10 million invested not in buying land but would be issued if buying a home of condo of said value) and with that you get a long term visa ..no age restrictions, ut do need police clearance check..
There are numerous small business run by barangs here.
i am sure there are plenty of SMALL business run by expats but how many BIG ones.I know more than a few huge companies/hotels owned and run by farangs

There are also permanent residence visas . need have a B visa for 3 years, good standing and invest only 3 million baht, renewable every 10 years.

Sure there other countries where u can also get long term visas but what does that have to do with getting one for thailand?
Before knocking how hard it is here in Thailand, do some research..... :beer3:
