American teacher in Ha Noi insults General Giap
And all hell breaks loose.
The guy has a huge following on social media in Vietnam but overstepped the line by a mile.
General Giap is a national hero after having beaten the French in Dien Bien Phu and the Americans a little later; revered by many in Vietnam.

He really ballsed up.In a hyperbolic joke, the English teacher said that was nothing - after a Vietnamese athlete recently won a gold medal, he said, he'd got a penis piercing making his testicles resemble Gen Giap.

You could say that, especially during the week when all of Vietnam was in a patriotic frenzy because of the good showing of the U-23 football team.prahocalypse now wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2018 3:40 pmHe really ballsed up.In a hyperbolic joke, the English teacher said that was nothing - after a Vietnamese athlete recently won a gold medal, he said, he'd got a penis piercing making his testicles resemble Gen Giap.

What do the Vietnamese think about the Dan Hauer controversy?
The controversy erupted after Vietnam’s U-23 football team got to the final of the Asian U-23 championship, which is a huge deal in this football fanatic country. (It’s actually a big deal not only in Vietnam but also in Southeast Asia as no other Southeast Asian team has made it to the quarter-final round before. .......................
One fan proudly posted on Facebook that he was going to get the Vietnam flag tattooed on his chest to celebrate this achievement and enters Dan, who commented on that post with the following lovely lines:
“Big fucking deal. When Hoang Xuan Vinh won his gold medal in the Olympics two years ago, I got a Prince Albert piercing with one of the balls shaped like Vo Nguyen Giap’s head.”
In one swoop, he managed to
1 Insult the millions of Vietnamese people who celebrated their U-23 football team’s unbelievable achievement,
2 Belittle another greatly celebrated sporting achievement (Hoang Xuan Vinh was named Vietnam’s athlete of the year for that gold medal),
3 and most importantly, insult one of the most revered people in the country.
So dear Dan, it’s nice that you could speak perfect English and had the desire to teach that in Vietnam. You earned a pretty good living and quite an amount of fame from that, so that was a fair trade in American standard. However, you’re no teacher in Vietnamese sense. Given your complete lack of desire to learn and adapt to the culture that supports your living, it may be time for you to go back to a culture you understand better.
