British missionary couple coming to Cambodia for two weeks

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Deprived Cambodian children to receive vital aid in overseas trip
DEPRIVED children in Cambodia will receive vital aid as a Christian couple volunteer their time and skills.

Deborah Vine and her husband Michael, from Radcliffe, are returning to Phnom Penh - Cambodia's capital - next month. They will work in Cambodian slums, building a home for villagers, and in three schools, training teachers and helping to resource classrooms.

Mrs Vine, aged 54, said: "The families in this area rely on scavenging on the tip to feed their families and the children pay an essential role in that. We are trying to break that cycle of poverty by educating the children.
"Phnom Penh is in a village of high incidence of HIV. The principle aim is to encourage children into school.

This is the couple's second annual trip, organised by Christian charity Mission Direct, which enables volunteers to travel and work alongside some of the world's poorest.
During their two-week visit, they will work closely with Mission Direct's partner Serve Cambodia.

Mr and Mrs Vine first heard about the project through friends at their home church, St Andrew's in Radcliffe, which supports Mission Direct. Mr Vine, aged 61, said: "We joined our friends on a visit to Cambodia last year.

We felt honoured to be able to use our skills in such a deprived country.

Development engineer Mr Vine will assist with a building project to create permanent homes for those living in the slums. One house costs around £6,500 to build.
He will also be training pastors from Serve Cambodia.

I don't remember any of this parging going on here. And I don't think plastering is what I would call it either. However, there are these guys here who will render a crooked wall with fucked-up diagonal brickwork into a shimmering plane in no time using cement. He ain't one of them, fair play to the old geezer but he shouldn't bother if that's the best work he could come up with for a photo shoot. You could hire a Vietnamese crew for a fraction of his costs and at least they'd know what the hell they were doing. They probably wouldn't be too keen on photo-shoots though.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

You've all been pretty tough on them. The fact they want to help the poor is nice, it's a very good initiative. I volunteered and tried to support the poorest of the poor for two years too.

The real problem is that these people ask for something in return, they want the poorest of the poor to return the favor done to them by starting to believe in Jesus Christ.

I don't care what anybody beliefs in - that's up to them, but to reach out a helping hand to the poorest and ask for their faith in return is just not good. Simply not good. And I put it mildly here.

Fully agree, and if u had been poor ever in your life and would need "sustainable" help, don''t accept anyone to bring job stealing shit to town. It only prolongs the agony, delaying durable progress from within.

Thats why people on here were tough on them, are you confused? They don,t want to help because they are “nice” they want to convert them

Evangelicals want to replace your imaginary friend with their imaginary friend.

If they truly cared about the Cambodians, they would spend the two weeks clearing landmines.
