Phnom Penh looks to medical tourism

Two high-powered developers in Cambodia are partnering with a Bangkok-based health care consultancy to establish a high-quality medical centre in Phnom Penh in the hopes of establishing the capital as a medical tourism destination.

Singapore Medical Center (SGMC), a Cambodia-based company owned by Sear Rithy and his business partner Tan Teck Kee, has partnered with Bangkok-based health care management company AJT Holdings to launch a medical centre inside Phnom Penh’s luxury condominium complex The Bridge.

The Bridge, a $300 million mixed-use project started in mid-2014, is a joint development project between Worldbridge Land – run by Rithy and Tan – and Singapore-based Oxley Holdings.

The $8 million medical centre is set to occupy 1.3 square kilometres on a single floor of the complex, and is scheduled to open in the third quarter of this year.

I can just see a Singaporean, Thai, or Vietname rushing to Cambodia for treatment. Or even a wealthy enough Cambodian if it comes to it. Who's it for again?

The US would be the biggest contender I should think:
A Growing Number of American Patients are Seeking Medical Treatment Abroad. The medical tourism industry has seen a major increase in the past decade.

Researchers have confirmed that:
· In 2013, about 75,000 American citizens traveled to India for medical treatment and more than 300,000 went to Latin America.
· It is estimated that approximately 1.25 million Americans travel abroad in 2014 for medical treatment.

I can see why they go to India, a lot of Indian doctors have trained or worked under the NHS in the UK. I can also see why they go to LA for treatment. Argentina, Brazil etc. Both have had fairly good reviews in the main. But Cambodia? I guess if they push the advertising and lie a bit...

Think about Thailand, many people swear by their medical facilities, but they were non existent before the "60's and developed from the '70's onward largely as a result of the massive influx of cash injected by the US.

During the 1st – 3rd National Health Plans (1961-1970), the Thai health system was in its very early stages and the health plan was not very constructively developed. Since there were limited health facilities, the majority of people did not seek care from professionals
(Fig 1). With regards to the health workforce, according to Wibulpolprasert (2003), it was the so-called external brain-drain era.
Due to the high demand for doctors in the United States during the early 1960s, many doctors trained in Thailand emigrated to work in the United States. This period lasted over a decade. Over all, Thailand lost approximately 1,500 doctors due to migration, 25% of the limited number of well-trained doctors (Wibulpolprasert, 1999).

This must be a joke, though I suppose you could attract foreign doctors for a smaller price than they would ask back home. Might be something to it that way.
