Google Translate is freaking out Sihanoukville

There were some similar jokes in Google translate in my language a few years ago too, for example a small town with a lot of immigrants was translated to Mogadishu.
Someone just tried it and it came back kampong Som, but that's using the proper name for snooky. I suppose we ought to try typing in Sihanoukville in Cambodian alphabet, but cannot find a Khmer who knows how. they all call it kampong som
yeah its a similar thing to Saigon/Ho Chi Minh, the original name was Kompong Saom and most locals still call it that, then it got renamed to Khaet Preah Sihanuk in honour of King Sihanouk

Personally i always say Kompong Saom and កំពង់សោម when writing it, Sihanoukville is a bit of a mouthful to say correctly, which most foreigners dont

Kep = Kaep
Kompong Som = Kompong Saom
HE = Hun Saen

Takeo (Takaev) and Kratie (Kracheh) are also both mispronounced all the time

i was meaning the older population still call it Saigon
where as some of the younger population and tourists call it Ho Chi Minh

though Ho Chi Minh was a pretty good guy as far as revolutionary figures go

what was the area called before the french called it sihanoukville? its only been a town since the 1950's/60's
ive not once seen Sihanoukville written in Khmer script only Khaet Preah Sihanouk or Krong Preah Sihanouk and Kompong Saom

It didn't exist. The French built it as a harbour in vacant land when they couldn't get down the Mekong. The KR changed the name and it didn't go back until the mid-90s, which is why everyone calls it Kampong Saom

The old maps show the entire bay as Kampong Saom/som, like this german one from 1867

or this one from 1881 shows "Estuary of the Kampongsom River" and puts Kampongsom as a dot well up what would now be the Sre Ambel river.

Som/Saom is listed as meaning "divine or sacred water of the gods on sealang.org, so I guess that's fitting to rename it after a divine god-king.

Older maps only show Langor and Carol on what would be the Cambodian coast, then later Pontiamo - which appears to be where Kampong Saom is on the later maps -- and others, but no Kampong Saom/som on any maps I've got until 1867.
