The Ministry of Environment has decided to hand over a Catholic church abandoned in Bokor National Park in Kampot province to the Catholic community for management. On Sunday, the ministry held a ceremony to hand over the church to the Catholic National Office for Social Communication.

Environment Minister Say Samal said that the government decided to hand over the church to the community in order to maintain, repair, and keep it preserved for religious practices. “It means that the government recognizes all religions and the people’s right to practice their faith,” he said.

Ly Sovanna, executive director for the Catholic National Office for Social Communication, said that the church was abandoned and not maintained since the civil war.
Mr Sovanna said that his organization had in the past suggested to the government that it could maintain the church and is pleased to have it under its control.
“Some parts of this church are broken,” he said. “The Catholic community will repair it and it will be able to be used again for worship.”

The church was built in 1917 by French colonials atop Bokor Mountain.

No it wasn't, nothing was built till after the road was made in the mid 20s.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Uuuurgh, they should leave it as is, maybe just clean up the shitty graffiti, draws more tourists in its present state than it ever will If it is refurbished...I don’t think many people bother to visit the the old casino anymore, lost its attraction once they started refurbishing it.

Er, I think they want to do god stuff in it, rather than increase tourism.
