51 baby turtles freed back into natural habitat in Kratie
Kratie Provincial Fisheries Administration and WCS officials yesterday released 51 baby turtles into a natural habitat along the Mekong River in Kratie’s Sambo district.
Provincial Fisheries Administration director Mak Ponlork said that the baby turtles were collected by community nest protection groups from the beach along the Mekong River in Kratie immediately after hatching from their nests.
He says after collecting them from the shore, the officials nurtured them for two to four weeks before releasing them back to their natural habitat.
Ponlork added that every year, the frog-headed turtle breeds between November and June.
He said that in the spawning season this year, as of mid-February, the community nest protection team found 28 nests of endangered turtles, with a total of 823 eggs.
Ponlork noted that this number is more than 50 percent higher than the spawning season of 2020-2021 in the same period.

Celebrating World Turtle Day in Cambodia !
580 Iconic Giant Turtle Released into Mekong River on World Turtle Day
AKP Phnom Penh, May 23, 2022 --
To mark World Turtle Day, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in collaboration with Fisheries Administration celebrates the conservation of the Critically Endangered Cantor’s Giant Softshell Turtles in Cambodia, by releasing 580 hatchlings into the wild, according to a press release from WCS issued this afternoon.
“With continuous support from our donors and good cooperation from the Fisheries Administration (FiA), plus strong commitments of our field staff and community nest protection team, WCS has made significant progress in conserving this critically endangered turtle species over the past years,” said Mr. Ken Sereyrotha, Country Programme Director for WCS Cambodia.
“However, this species is being threatened by illegal hunting and trafficking. In 2021, at least nine individuals were seen trading online and two were found dead by illegal fishing,” he said.
In the 2022 nesting season, the community nest protection team found 63 nests with 2,155 eggs. From early March to May 20, 2022, 982 baby turtles hatched from 40 nests, of which 402 hatchlings were released into the wild, while the rest were released today. The conservation team await the fate of the remaining eggs, and they are hopeful that these remaining nests will show positive results. In the 2021 nesting season, the team found 66 nests with 2,528 eggs and released 1,300 hatchlings into the wild.

Re: Endangered softshell turtle eggs discovered in the Mekong
UPDATE
Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): 10 December 2022 – The pelochelys cantorii turtle has been listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
The turtle’s former main habitats were once in Vietnam and Thailand, but nowadays the turtle is rarely seen and is likely to become extinct due to poaching and trafficking, including the illegal collection of tortoise eggs for sale or as food.
In Cambodia, scientists did not find the presence of this species between 2003 and 2007, and believed it had disappeared. However, in 2007, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (CI) found the pelochelys cantorii in the Mekong River between Kratie and Stung Treng provinces. Conservation International (CI) ** worked with the Turtle Fisheries Administration in Kratie until 2017, when the project was handed over to WCS. Since then, WCS and the Fisheries Administration have been working to conserve the species by preventing any illegal activities related to the capture and trade of the tortoise.
The frog-headed (or cantor soft-shelled) turtle is one of the many rare species living in the Mekong River, because it lives in deep canyons with the Mekong dolphins and giant trout. The release of the frog-headed turtle into the wild is an important contribution to the restoration of this species from future extinction.
In the spawning season of 2022, the community nest protection team found 63 frog-headed turtle nests, equivalent to 2,155 eggs. From the beginning of March to May 20, 2022, a total of 982 baby frogs hatched from 40 nests. The team released 402 baby turtles back into the wild while another 580 were released today. The team expects the remaining eggs to hatch soon.
During the 2021 spawning season, the team found 66 nests, equivalent to 2,528 eggs, and released 1,300 baby tortoises back into the wild. All this is positive news for the preservation of the pelochelys cantorii.
