A little bit better than the average tourist drivel that usually appears in magazine reports like this (except for the KR headline trope)

OT - but I do wonder what became of Stern? - hopefully he didn't get locked up for trying to overthrow the govt or worse

Cambodia’s Pepper Authorised for Direct Shipment to China
AKP Phnom Penh, May 12, 2023 --

The Kingdom of Cambodia is now able to directly export its pepper to the Chinese market, Chinese Embassy in Cambodia said this morning.

The direct shipment is made possible after the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) approved the list of 28 registered pepper farms and seven packaging factories.

Cambodia’s pepper has completed all export procedures and is allowed to be shipped to China, the same source underlined.

Pepper is the first Cambodian agricultural product to be allowed for direct shipment to China in 2023 and the first ever spice to be authorised for export to the Chinese market.

Việt Nam does not face challenge from Cambodia pepper exports to China: experts
June 05, 2023 - 11:39

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam's pepper exports are not challenged by Cambodia being issued a licence to export its pepper to China directly, according to experts.

The Việt Nam Trade Office in Cambodia quoted Khmer Times sources saying that Cambodian pepper would be available in China directly after the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) approved Cambodia’s export proposal.

Accordingly, the GACC approved seven packaging factories and 28 growing facilities for pepper exports in Cambodia.

Lê Việt Anh, head of the Việt Nam Pepper Association's office, Cambodia exporting pepper directly to China was not a challenge for Việt Nam's pepper exports immediately because the pepper volume exported from Cambodia to China was not much.

“About 90-95 per cent of Cambodia's pepper output have been exported to Việt Nam, then processors in Việt Nam have re-exported the volume to other countries, including China," said Anh. "Meanwhile, Cambodia has few trading companies, mainly FDI enterprises."

Hoàng Phước Bính, vice chairman of Chư Sê Pepper Association (Gia Lai), said this was normal. Cambodia's pepper had been mainly exported to Việt Nam and re-exported to China. The remaining 10-20 per cent had been shipped directly to China and Europe.

With this permission, the pepper volume exported directly from Cambodia to China could increase, Bính said.

Therefore, according to experts, it could increase competitive pressure on Vietnamese pepper exported to China in the future.

The Việt Nam Pepper Association said Cambodia had been the second largest pepper exporter to Việt Nam after Brazil. In the first four months of this year, Cambodia exported 1,715 tonnes of pepper to Việt Nam, down 64 per cent compared to the same period in 2022. However this was official export, not including several thousand tonnes of unofficial exports.

2023 Exports of Kampot Pepper Up 39%

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's export of renowned Kampot pepper, one of the country's only two products registered as a geographical indication (GI) in the European Union (EU), rose by 39 percent in 2023, a farmers' representative said on Thursday. Nguon Lay, president of the Kampot Pepper Promotion Association (KPPA), said the Southeast Asian country exported 110 tonnes of Kampot pepper last year, up 39 percent from 79 tonnes in 2022. "The demand for Kampot pepper has bounced back after a steep plunge of 31 percent in 2022," he told Xinhua.

He attributed the export growth last year to China's approval for Cambodia's pepper to get direct access to the Chinese market in last May. According to Lay, about 85 percent of the pepper was shipped to Europe and the remaining 15 percent was sold to other countries, including the United States, China, Japan, and South Korea, among others. He said Kampot pepper comes in three varieties -- black, red and white -- selling for 15 U.S. dollars, 25 U.S. dollars and 28 U.S. dollars per kilogram, respectively. "China is a big market, and we hope our export of Kampot pepper to China will continue to grow this year and in future years," Lay said.

Renowned for its delicate aroma and strong spicy taste, Kampot pepper, the country's GI product since 2010, is currently popular in the European market. Located in the southwestern region, the coastal province of Kampot has approximately 240 hectares of pepper farms, Lay said, adding that a hectare produces an average of 2.5 tons of pepper per annum. The harvest season runs from March to June.
