OK, the most telling fact is that the kid is alive.
He would be dead from a Russell's viper bite in the neck within an hour.
It's possible it was a python
However, no retic would normally bite in that situation unless the kid rolled over onto it in his sleep..but pythons are usually secretive and avoid humans
