New bird flu outbreak in Kampong Cham
8 December 2017
Kampong Cham: After a period of calm, bird flu (H5N1) has recurred again at chicken farm Khun Sambo in Koh Samay village, Trapeang Pras commune, Prey Chhor district, causing 1,700 dead poultry.
The outbreak was detected two weeks ago when samples were taken and sent to a Phnom Penh laboratory for testing. The tests have confirmed that the bird deaths were due to the virus H5N1.
Huong Sovin, chief of Prey Chhor district veterinarian, said that on the morning of December 8, that he was accompanied by the Director of Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, to ensure the Provincial Animal Health Department has sprayed the 40-hectare poultry breeding site.
It is hoped this will be sufficient to contain the outbreak. Poultry breeders are urged to be vigilant.

Re: New bird flu outbreak in Kampong Cham
11 December 2017
- Bird flu outbreaks have had a human cost in the past – 14 Cambodians died during one in 2013 – but no human cases have been detected in Koh Svay village so far, according to Ministry of Health spokesman Ly Sovann. In a Facebook post, Sovann warned people to avoid eating or selling poultry that dies under mysterious circumstances and to maintain hygiene practices.
Kim Sour Phirun, head of Kampong Cham’s Health Department, said authorities are checking nearby health centres for patients with symptoms of H5N1.
H5N1 is difficult to transmit between people, but public health experts are concerned that the virus could mutate. Humans are infected mostly through handling of infected birds.

Not sure that spraying is going to do a great deal seeing as they are trudging around in their office loafers. Surely they're aware that it jumps species?

KAMPONG CHAM - About 30 chickens have fallen ill and died in Kampong Cham province’s Chamkar Leu district, leaving authorities searching for answers.
Chey Yo commune police chief Sar Chamreoun said yesterday that about 30 chickens belonging to villagers in Trapaing Russey village got sick and died from Monday to Wednesday.
“The owners did not inform us when their chickens got sick, but instead told us after they had already been buried,” he said, adding he was unsure what had been the cause of death. “We cannot say yet if it’s the outbreak of bird flu disease,” said Mr Chamroeun.
He added that about 100 cattle in the same village were also sick, but officials had already visited and given them injections because they had foot and mouth disease.
Kem Savoeun, director of Kampong Cham province’s department of agriculture, fishery and forestry, confirmed yesterday that chickens had died and samples had been taken to test.
“A specialist went to spray and inject the rest of the chickens a few days ago. We can’t say it’s an outbreak of bird flu because the lab results have not been released,” he said...

Farms sprayed to stop bird flu
30 January 2018
Agriculture Ministry officials sprayed anti-viral disinfectant at livestock breeding farms nearly 40,000 times in 2017, during which time there were four cases* of H5N1.
According to the ministry’s annual report, expert officials sprayed a total of 39,879 times at breeding farms and slaughter areas throughout the country.
It added that only 29 farms were fined, amounting to about $4,000. Most farmers were just educated on how to maintain a safe and clean environment for their animals.
The report said that in 2017, the ministry discovered four cases* of H5N1, or bird flu, in Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham and Svay Rieng provinces.
Earlier this month, nearly 300 chickens and ducks were culled after a new case of H5N1 was found in Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district that had infected three chickens.
